Bay Area Bike to Work Day Is Coming May 11

  Over 100,000 new and seasoned bike commuters are expected to pedal to work on Thursday, May 11, as part of the 23rd annual Bay Area Bike to Work Day. Hundreds of “Energizer Stations” with refreshments and volunteers will be scattered throughout the nine Bay Area counties, and a range of activities and events are planned for the day. Bay Area Bike to Work Day organizers also recently announced winners of the 2017 Bike Commuter of the Year Awards – 12 individuals from the region’s nine counties recognized for inspiring bicycling in their communities. MTC   Yerba Buena’s Vista Point Now Open to Cyclists, Pedestrians
A ceremony marked the opening of Vista Point, a relaxation and rejuvenation area for cyclists and walkers who make it across the Bay Bridge East Span to Yerba Buena Island. Coming just as the bike/ped path expands its hours to weekdays, the way station features restrooms, benches, a hydration station and bike racks, plus sweeping views of the East Span. MORE
 
 
MTC   Officials Gather to Mark Start of Construction of Golden Gate Bridge Suicide Deterrent System
Politicians, community advocates and transportation agencies came together last month to commemorate the beginning of construction of the suicide deterrent system on the Golden Gate Bridge (see video below). The suicide barrier, funded in large part by MTC, has an expected completion date of 2021. MORE
 
 
MTC   Draft Environmental Impact Report for Plan Bay Area 2040 Released
The Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) and MTC have released for public review the Draft Environmental Impact Report (Draft EIR) for Plan Bay Area 2040, the region’s long-range transportation and housing blueprint. The Draft EIR analyzes potential adverse significant impacts associated with implementation of the proposed Plan Bay Area 2040. MORE
 
 
MTC   What Does the Future Hold for Clipper®?
MTC and Bay Area transit agencies are asking for the public’s help as they continue to plan for improvements to Clipper®, the San Francisco Bay Area’s transit fare-payment system. Transit riders and others can weigh in until June 1 on what the next generation of Clipper should include through a new online survey at futureofclipper.com. MORE
 
 
MTC   New Vital Signs Data Tracks Disparate Impacts of Bay Area’s Economic Boom
MTC’s award-winning Vital Signs website has been expanded to include an equity section, with information on the region’s housing affordability, housing displacement risks, poverty rates, wage stratification, migration trends and life expectancy. MTC   Last Old Bay Bridge Truss Removed
Caltrans’ ongoing project to demolish the original East Span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge reached a historic milestone in late March 2017 when the final 1.7-million-pound steel truss section was lowered and disassembled. MORE

MTC   Ada's Café Now Open in The Hub at the Bay Area Metro Center
Ada’s Café is now open for business in The Hub @ 375 Beale Street on the ground floor of the Bay Area Metro Center in San Francisco. The café serves hot and cold beverages, breakfast, pastries and sweets, sandwiches, and salads and soups. Ada’s is a non-profit with a mission to hire, train and empower adults with developmental disabilities. Hours: 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. MORE
 
 
MTC   Landscapes in Transition
The Bay Area Metro Center Community Art Program invites the public to view the works of artists Deborah Sibony and Anne Subercaseaux. Both artists feature the imagery of the old East Span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge in their art, one in painting, the other in printmaking. The exhibit, “Landscapes in Transition,” is on display in the first floor lobby of the Bay Area Metro Center, 375 Beale Street, San Francisco. A brand-new evening speaker series co-hosted by MTC, Metro Talks, will kick off on Thursday, May 25 at the Bay Area Metro Center. Trulia Chief Economist Ralph McLaughlin will share his thoughts on the regional housing crisis. A public hearing will be held during the Joint Planning/Administrative Committee meeting for interested residents to comment on the Draft Plan Bay Area 2040, Draft EIR, and Draft Transportation-Air Quality Conformity Analysis for Draft Plan Bay Area 2040 and Amended 2017 Transportation Improvement Program.

The Napa County Open House for the Draft Plan Bay Area 2040 will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 2840 Soscol Avenue, Napa.

The Solano County Open House for the Draft Plan Bay Area 2040 will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Solano County Events Center, 601 Texas Street, Fairfield.

Tuesday, May 16

A public hearing will be held in San Jose for interested residents to comment on the Draft Plan Bay Area 2040, Draft EIR, and Draft Transportation-Air Quality Conformity Analysis for Draft Plan Bay Area 2040 and Amended 2017 Transportation Improvement Program. The hearing will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Dr. Martin Luther King Library, Room 225, 150 E. San Fernando Street, San Jose.

Wednesday, May 17

The San Francisco County Open House for the Draft Plan Bay Area 2040 will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Bay Area Metro Center, Yerba Buena Room – First Floor, 375 Beale Street, San Francisco.

Thursday, May 18

A public hearing will be held in Vallejo for interested residents to comment on the Draft Plan Bay Area 2040, Draft EIR, and Draft Transportation-Air Quality Conformity Analysis for Draft Plan Bay Area 2040 and Amended 2017 Transportation Improvement Program. The hearing will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum, 734 Marin Street, Vallejo.

Saturday, May 20

The Marin County Public Workshop and Open House for the Draft Plan Bay Area 2040 will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Mill Valley Community Center, 180 Camino Alto, Mill Valley.

Monday, May 22

The Santa Clara County Open House for the Draft Plan Bay Area 2040 will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Marriott Hotel, San Jose Ballroom IV-VI, 301 South Market Street, San Jose.

The Sonoma County Open House for the Draft Plan Bay Area 2040 will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Finley Community Center, 2060 W. College Avenue, Santa Rosa.

Tuesday, May 23

A panel discussion on “Affordable Transit for Low-Income Riders” will be held starting at 12:30 p.m. at the SPUR Urban Center, 654 Mission Street, San Francisco.

Wednesday, May 24
