On Tuesday, April 1 at 8:24 a.m., a 9-1-1 call was received reporting flames coming from a multi-story, multi-family residential apartment complex in the 1900 block of California Street. The building's occupants self-evacuated before firefighters arrived.
Fire units were dispatched at 8:25 a.m. and arrived on the scene at 8:28 a.m. Units arrived to find an active fire coming from the kitchen of a second-floor apartment in a two-story, multi-family residential apartment complex. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames with a fire-attack hose line, preventing the fire from spreading further into the building.
Firefighters performed an extensive overhaul of the affected apartments by cutting open the walls and roof to ensure complete extinguishment of the flames. Firefighters used thermal imaging cameras to measure heat behind the drywall to ensure the fire did not spread.
The residents of the three affected apartments received a $250 gift card from the California Professional Firefighters Union Supplying Aid to Victims of Emergency Program. Due to the gas and electric utilities being disconnected, the American Red Cross was contacted to coordinate temporary housing for the three adult residents.
One resident was evaluated for injuries by Santa Clara County Paramedics. The resident declined transportation and treatment at a local hospital. The fire was extinguished with no injuries. The Mountain View Police Department provided traffic control for two hours while fire units and equipment were on the scene.
The kitchen was determined to be the origin of the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The estimated damage to the contents and structure is $325,000. The building was turned over to facilities maintenance before fire crews left the scene.
