Record Viewership at Fourth of July

Fireworks Spectacular

The 35^th Annual 4^th of July Fireworks Spectacular at Shoreline drew record crowds this year to the North Bayshore Area. The summer weather cooperated for a dazzling professional fireworks display for those watching the show from Shoreline Lake, one of Shoreline’s designated viewing areas, or Shoreline Amphitheatre, which also featured music, courtesy of the San Francisco Symphony.

A recurring theme of post-pandemic events is higher-than-normal attendance levels. With the popularity of the event, the Shoreline area experienced higher viewership at a wider range of locations both in Shoreline and the surrounding North Bayshore Area to watch the fireworks show. This led to heavier traffic and longer lines than previous years, while also requiring flexibility from the staff and volunteers who helped at the event. The City of Mountain View is following up with its vendors, including Live Nation, to review operations and help improve the guest experience for next year’s 4th of July celebration.

The 4th of July event was presented by Live Nation with the City, ABC-7 and Bonneville San Francisco as sponsors.

Mountain View Rolling Out New
Green Compost Carts Next Month

Starting in August, Mountain View residents will receive a new green compost cart to replace the old yard trimmings carts.

The carts are being replaced for several reasons, which are:

To comply with State-mandated green color for compost and lid educational signage.
Most carts have exceeded their useful life—over 15 years old.
It’s more cost-effective to replace carts in bulk.
To have clear, consistent messaging— avoid a mix of old/new containers and signage.
Old carts are 100% recyclable and will not be landfilled - they will be recycled or reused.

The instructions for exchanging the old carts with new ones are as follows:

Recology will deliver your new green compost cart(s) first (the same size as what you currently have). Most households will get it the day before your service day.
On your service day, set-out your old yard trimmings cart(s) for removal.
Recology will remove your old cart(s) that same day.

Technology Showcase Returns on July 19-20

The 8th Annual Technology Showcase kicks off with a panel presentation on Wednesday evening, July 19 at 5 p.m. at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, followed by exhibits on display from 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. on Thursday, July 20 at Civic Center Plaza, 500 Castro St. The Showcase closes with a panel presentation at 4 p.m. on Thursday, July 20.

Electrify Mountain View Webinar:

Benefits to Switching to Electric at Home

The City of Mountain View’s Electrify Mountain View program is excited to present an informational webinar on the benefits of using electric appliances in your home. The event will be held virtually on Tuesday, July 25 from 5:30 - 7 p.m.

Electrification is the process of replacing technologies that use fossil fuels with efficient technologies powered by electricity. City staff will share how electrification can save you thousands on your yearly energy bills and keep you comfortable while reducing your carbon emissions.

This session will include information on what electrification is and how you can take action, the incentives and savings that are available, and how easy it is for you to start saving money!

On Wednesday, June 28, the City of Mountain View, the County of Santa Clara and Move MV gathered to recognize and celebrate the largest safe parking program in Santa Clara County, its expansion, and the impact the program is having on addressing homelessness.

Library Happenings

The Library’s Summer Reading Program has reached the half-way point, but there is still time to register and participate. You can Drop Everything and Read in the park with popsicles and ice cream on Tuesday, July 18, then bring the kids to an entertaining and informative Shark Showcase on Thursday, July 20, and the unique Happy Birds concert on Wednesday Jul 26, both sponsored by the Friends of the Mountain View Library. Then, on Monday July 31, join us for the Summer Reading Finale, featuring Palo Alto's School of Rock House Band, a rocking cover band composed of music students aged 12-18.
