National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, April 26, 2014

According to the County Health Rankings, Marin has more drug overdose deaths than most California counties. Prescription drug misuse and abuse has emerged as a local public health priority. Police stations around the county and the Marinwood Fire Station will be participating in the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Take-Back Day, giving the public a way to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription and over- the- counter pills.

On April 26, 2014 from 10 AM to 2 PM, as part of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, several Marin locations will be offering collection sites for disposal of unused pharmaceuticals.

The Marin County sponsored site is located at the Marinwood Fire Station at 777 Miller Creek Road.

Other sites confirmed at this date where you may dispose of unwanted pills are at the following police stations:

  • Mill Valley, 1 Hamilton Drive
  • Tiburon, 1155 Tiburon Blvd.
  • Belvedere, 450 San Rafael Avenue
  • Novato, 909 Machin Avenue
  • (NOTE: other police departments will likely be participating – so check with your local police station, if not listed here.)

Other locations:

  • City of San Rafael, lobby of City Hall
  • College of Marin, 835 College Avenue, Kentfield, Temporary Building 1 (TB1)

The service is free and anonymous ― no questions asked.

Directions on Preparing for Drop Off: Take your pills out of their containers and put them in baggies for safe disposal.

  • What is Accepted: All prescription pills, vitamins, supplements and over-the-counter medications are welcome, as well as pet medications (pill form only).
  • Not Accepted: Creams, gels, liquids or containers of any kind.

The Marin County Sheriff’s office is sponsoring the Marinwood Fire Station as part of the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration National Take-back Day.

Thank you for taking the time to search the medicine cabinet for unwanted prescription medications and for keeping our communities safe from inappropriate access to prescription drugs. Many thanks for participating.
