Marin County COVID-19 Status Update

Marin County COVID-19 Status Update: March 17, 2023

The Marin County COVID-19 Status Update is published weekly and as needed to share important news and resources related to the COVID-19 pandemic response. We remain here for you.

Anniversary of Nation's First Stay at Home Order

Yesterday was the 3-year anniversary of the Bay Area stay at home order. On March 16, 2020, Marin County joined 5 Bay Area counties to issue the nation’s first COVID-19 stay at home order. Over the following weeks the rest of the nation followed.  Today, those six counties have among the lowest COVID death rates and highest vaccination rates in the nation. Other major COVID-19 pandemic moments have been compiled by local media at Coronavirus Timeline.

Local Wastewater and Hospitalizations Combined Equals “Marin COVID Level”

Today’s COVID-19 dashboard includes a new tool developed by Marin County Public Health. Marin COVID Level is reported as High, Medium, or Low based on both community transmission rates (wastewater levels) and severity of illnesses (hospitalizations). This adds more specific local information than that provided by CDC’s Community COVID Levels. Using this metric, today’s Marin COVID Level is Medium.

COVID transmission rates remain elevated in Marin

Over the past two weeks, Marin County has experienced an increase in COVID-19 outbreaks in long-term care facilities, and more cases reported in schools. Wastewater levels in four of six Marin collection sites countywide are showing increasing virus levels. This is a reminder that the virus remains active, and that the precautions we’ve all learned remain important.

  • Test if you have symptoms, especially if you are at high-risk.
  • Seek treatment if you’re infected.
  • Mask in higher risk settings if you’re at risk for severe COVID-19.
  • Maintain protection with the bivalent booster.
