Audio Interview: “Delta is Different”

Dr. Lael Duncan, one of our lead doctors for COVID-19 outbreak mitigation, recently spoke with KWMR’s Amanda Eichstaedt about the Delta variant.  The interview, which is available online, covers everything from when Delta first appeared in Marin to what we are observing now, and how its impacting our local ICU and hospitalization rates. The discussion also explores breakthrough cases and how to interpret data (and news headlines) on breakthrough cases.

Listen to Dr. Duncan’s entire interview on KWMR’s website.

Vaccine Verification to Be Required for First Responders

Marin County Public Health announced a new public health order today that will require all Marin County first responder agencies (law enforcement, fire, Emergency Medical Services, etc.) to verify the vaccination status of their personnel. Personnel who are not fully vaccinated, or whose vaccination status is unknown, will be obligated to receive a COVID-19 test at least once a week and provide results to employers.

This order, effective on September 15th, 2021, is being issued in response to the continued health threat that COVID-19 poses in our community and workplace. The California Department of Public Health signed a Public Health Order on July 26th, 2021 requiring staff from hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and homeless shelters to verify vaccination status, but omitted first responders who have to enter these facilities and other high-risk settings as part of their occupation. This measure is a tool to reduce the potential of transmission between personnel who operate is high-risk settings and to protect our counties’ most vulnerable populations.

In addition to the verify vaccination or test requirement for first responders, the today’s health order will require that all public sector employers to verify vaccination status of all employees, but routine testing of unvaccinated public sector employees is not required.
