Upgrade the Drake Updates

Night Work, SFD Streetlighting and More

Thank you to all Kentfield/Greenbrae community for your continued patience during the Upgrade the Drake project/construction. While there is more disturbance to come, the project is on time for completion by fall. A newly paved road, improved intersections, synchronized traffic signals, almost 7,000 feet of Marin Water pipeline, new street lighting and more...will serve the community well for decades to come. See below for updates on night work, landscaping, and our June 24 Upgrade the Drake community zoom.

Upcoming Night Work

Given less traffic from COVID and stay-at-home order, the construction team has been able to complete most of the project work to date during day-time hours. However, as restrictions have lifted, businesses opened and schools back in session, daytime traffic is approaching pre-covid levels and night work is needed to prevent traffic congestion on SFD and backups on Hwy101.

Installation of the last section of water pipeline from Eliseo Drive to Highway 101 started May 23 but will take more time to complete than the originally anticipated date of June 18. Existing underground storm drains and the condition of the existing pipeline make this work slow going. Work will take place between 8pm to 5am Sunday night to Friday morning, with some work at the Eliseo/SFD intersection being done during the day when possible.

Grinding and paving work will begin June 7 with four days of day work, followed by night work Sunday, June 13 through July 2. Work will take place between 6pm and 6am Sunday night to Friday morning. The work will start at the northwest end of the project at Ross Terrace and move east to Hwy 101. See the Traffic Alert Notice for details.

Appreciate residents’ patience over the past year, and especially during this phase of the project. While the crew is working hard to manage noise levels, this type of work is noisy and can’t always be mitigated. No night work will be done on Friday and Saturday nights and all will be completed by early July. Continue to check the Upgrade the Drake website for updates.

Landscaping Delay

With the drought declaration for Marin, Upgrade the Drake will support water conservation by delaying new landscape planting until a later date, including medians and neighborhood entries. The project will go ahead with installation of irrigation infrastructure, and mulch in the median islands to support existing trees. Weeds will also be chopped/removed. Additionally, the contractor will be using recycled/reclaimed water for construction activities. Stay tuned for when we get the green light for planting, in the meantime go to the website to see landscaping plans.

Streetlights Community Meeting

Please join me and the Upgrade the Drake team on Thursday, June 24, at 5:30pm for an update on Sir Francis Drake streetlighting. The County initiated an assessment and redesign of the new street lighting in response to neighbor concerns primarily related to the new lights installed on the roadway median islands. The redesign is intended to reduce light dispersal on adjacent properties and improve the light aesthetic while maintaining lighting uniformity levels necessary for safety.

Please visit the project website for more information and to submit any comments or questions. You can also subscribe to receive updates. Read the recent press release to learn more about the project milestones and upcoming work.
