Sir Francis Drake Boulevard Renaming Update

Board of Supervisors Hearing Tuesday, March 9

An online public hearing of the Board of Supervisors is scheduled for this Tuesday, March 9 at 1:30pm to discuss potentially renaming portions of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard that run through unincorporated areas of the County. Viewers may watch or log in to participate and share comments with help from instructions on the County website.

Residents can review the staff report/attachments. To submit comment to the board of Supervisors, email BOS@marincounty.org and include agenda item (#12) in subject line. To ensure inclusion in the Board agenda packets, please send in your comments by 3:30pm on Monday, March 8.

Actions taken by the five jurisdictions involved in the renaming discussion (County, Larkspur, Ross, Fairfax, San Anselmo) thus far:

  • Ross’ council voted to retain the name January 14.
  • Larkspur’s council voted February 17 to retain Sir Francis Drake Boulevard as the legal name, adopt as a co-name what the consensus of the other jurisdictions is, and in the absence of that explore a historical designation or a ceremonial name.
  • Fairfax’s council voted to change the name March 3.
  • San Anselmo’s council plans to vote on the evening of March 9.

See below to review meetings/outreach to date as well as resources available:

In June, the SFD Working Group hosted a community-wide Zoom listening session. Community members were invited to voice their opinions on the zoom, or via email. Click here to view.

In August, in response to the range of comments, questions, varying historical accounts coming out of listening session, the Working Group partnered with the Marin County Free Library (MCFL) to host a learning session. Visit the Marin County Free Library’s Drake Boulevard History Resource Page to review the learning session in both English and Spanish as well as online resources about Sir Francis Drake, about the Boulevard (click here for Dewey Livingston’s “Sir Francis Drake Boulevard: Road of Many Names”) and about Coast Miwok history.

In January of 2021, Supervisors Rice and Rodoni hosted a virtual informational meeting for residents and businesses along the corridor in the unincorporated areas of the Ross Valley and West Marin. During February, each Supervisor hosted virtual community conversations in their respective districts, geared towards soliciting comment and conversation with residents of the unincorporated areas, but open to anyone who wanted to join. The intent of these of these meetings was for the Supervisors to hear from community members, and for community members to hear from each other.
