Southern Marin Scoop
YOUR NEW COUNTY SUPERVISOR
Please Share Widely:
Dear Southern Marin Residents,
On December 30, 2020 I had the distinct pleasure of being sworn into office by U.S. Congressman Jared Huffman, and on January 4, 2021, I officially began working for you and all the people of Marin, as your County Supervisor.
Thank you to the voters who elected me with over 80% of the vote. I am excited to serve Southern Marin’s distinctive cities, towns, and villages:
Almonte, Alto-Sutton Manor, Belvedere, Marin City, Mill Valley, Sausalito, Strawberry, Tam Valley, The Floating Homes, and Tiburon.

I will work hard and do my very best for you – and for all of Marin County.
I am excited to be joining my colleagues on the Board of Supervisors: President Dennis Rodoni (District 4) and Supervisors Damon Connolly (District 1), Katie Rice (District 2), and Judy Arnold (District 5). This is a hard-working, dedicated Board who shouldered quite a lot in 2020, along with my predecessor and friend, Kate Sears. I received a warm welcome at the first BOS meeting of 2021, and I am excited to be working with this collegial team that gets things done for our community!
The impacts of the coronavirus were felt shortly after I was elected, and I don’t need to tell anyone that COVID-19 has changed everything and touched everyone: our personal health, community health, and the health of our local economies.
Marin County has managed this challenging situation well and addressing COVID continues to be the #1 priority. We have some challenging days yet to come, but, if we all get together, we will get through it and on to better times.
But we must all work together, and we must be diligent as individuals: shelter in place, and when you do go out, wear your mask and wash your hands.
It’s also no secret that our County, and our world, face urgent challenges on many fronts: racial justice, inclusion, and addressing systemic racism, wildfires, housing and employment, education, climate change and sea level rise.
These are not issues that any of us can solve alone, by ourselves. These are issues that must be solved by all of us working together. By coming together as a community, we can make real change and can make real progress on the challenges we face. If we each give a little, we all get a lot.
I'm sure many of you are wondering what my priorities are as incoming Supervisor. I ran on the following platform, and these continue to be at the forefront of my mind:
- Keeping people safe – in terms of flooding and wildfire prevention, preparedness, and evacuations;
- Planning for the future – climate change and sea level rise;
- Ensuring the health, well-being, and quality of life for everyone by:
- Addressing racial equity and ending systemic racism;
- Providing homes for all income levels, including affordable housing for workers and seniors; and
- Providing programs and services for our seniors and our youth, including community coalitions to address teen substance abuse, and resources for Seniors through Age Friendly Cities and the County Aging Action Initiative;
- Addressing traffic congestion and the need to reduce transportation-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by promoting clean transportation choices, including EV’s, transit, walking, and biking; and
- Supporting strong local businesses and vibrant business districts.
During my first few months as Supervisor, I will be listening to my constituents and local government partners as much as possible to hear what you need, what you are concerned about, and how we can be helpful. I and my Aides will put a focus on communications and community engagement in the District. We want to hear from you:
- How can we bring County government closer to you?
- How can we be more communicative and responsive?
Let’s usher in the New Year with a renewed commitment to work together for the common good and make progress on the opportunities and challenges we face. Let’s commit to communicating and working together with candor and respect and compassion for one another. There are no magic bullets to the challenges we face; we are all this together and we are all we have.
I will end with a favorite saying, an African proverb: "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." Let’s make this a year where we go far – all of us – together.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve. May we all have a happier, healthier 2021.
Stephanie
