As 2020 comes to a close and my term as County Supervisor for Southern Marin comes to an end, I want to thank you for the honor and privilege of representing you and all the residents of District 3 since June of 2011. Who knew the work of a County Supervisor could be so interesting, varied, challenging, fun, and rewarding. Having smart and engaged residents made all the difference and I have greatly enjoyed getting to know so many of you over the years.
I know you will continue to be engaged, to pay attention, and offer insight and input on the many issues that confront us. And I hope you will continue your efforts to make our communities stronger, to lift up those in need, to celebrate the skills and talent of those around us, and to creatively address the challenges of our changing world.
This has been a year like no other. COVID-19 has focused our awareness on deep-rooted inequities of health, race, age, and financial capacity, and pushed us to think beyond self. Wildfires, unhealthy air, extreme heat, insufficient rainfall, and frequent high waters from King Tides have made evident the accelerating impacts of climate change. The urgent need to address equity and climate change could not be more apparent. We need to take care of ourselves and of each other.
2020 has made clear that we live in a world of complex and inter-related challenges, and that we need to stretch ourselves – to re-examine how we live in the world, to re-think how we perform our work, and to learn new skills. We also need to reclaim a sense of the collective good and refine how we engage with one another. Instead of wishing to go back to a “normal” we once knew, let’s go forward in a better way.
A decade of public service has brought many lessons, perhaps most repeatedly the importance of the basics: being open to learning, treating everyone with respect, valuing community, being humble, creating space for all voices, and being collaborative, patient, and persistent. We will need all of these practices as we go forward.
It’s been a real pleasure working for and with you. Keep healthy, happy, and engaged.
P.S. Stephanie Moulton-Peters will be sworn in as Marin County Supervisor for District 3 on Tuesday, January 5, at 9:00AM. I hope you will join this festive occasion (info on how to participate can be found on the BOS website). I know Stephanie will do great work in 2021 and beyond. District 3 is in good hands.
