[EDITED] District 4 Response to Sheriff's Update
County of Marin, California sent this bulletin at 07/25/2020 11:18 AM PDTDear District 4 Resident:
Thank you for taking the time to read this communication. I hope you and your family are well given the unprecedented circumstances as a result of our COVID-19 pandemic. I want to take an opportunity to address a recent Facebook posting by the Marin County’s Sheriff’s Office related to recent budget negotiations and their announcement to cut back staffing in Pt. Reyes Station. Click here to view the post
Two days ago, I met with Sheriff Doyle alongside our County Administrator, Matthew Hymel, to go over the expected changes to staffing in the Sheriff's Department for Pt. Reyes Station. I asked to be informed before changes went into effect, so that I could relay that information to all of you. That did not happen.
Given my conversation with the Sheriff, I was under the impression that the staffing shortage was due to the inability to attract new officers, the amount of overtime our patrol officers currently work, and partly due to the budget reduction. He made it clear that this action would be temporary as there is currently a new class of officers undergoing a 12-week training program.
Since this posting, I have spoken to the Sheriff and has he apologized for not telling me about the staffing changes, before posting them publicly. He was not aware that this information was being released today.
We are committed to work with the Sheriff to make sure West Marin has ample coverage for our needs. As I learned yesterday, the reduction of deputies in West Marin has been an ongoing conversation due to data revealing the low-call rates during the night and morning periods.
I want to sincerely thank the deputies who serve our communities in a very professional and respectful manner every day.
Best,
Dennis Rodoni, District 4
