Dear Friends,
The Public Health Order has been in effect for 135 days. It is during these difficult times that community role models emerge, demonstrating empathy and action. We are all thankful for the local heroes volunteering to buy groceries, run errands, and check-in on the wellbeing of neighbors. I want to thank all of you who have stepped up. I stand with you focused and committed to protecting the health and safety of all our residents.
On July 3, Marin County was added to the State of California’s watch list. The focus is on elevated disease transmission, increasing hospitalizations, and hospital capacity. Counties on the watch list are required to adhere to stricter State guidelines on reopening. In-person classrooms and many business sectors will not reopen until conditions improve. To get off the watch list our case numbers have to come down, which will require us all to wear face coverings, wash our hands, and practice physical distancing.
The Board of Supervisors on July 21 adopted an urgency ordinance approving administrative penalties for violation of health orders related to COVID-19. Wherever possible we want to offer education to the public first. The intent of this ordinance is to offer a less punitive means to address repeat offenders. During this difficult economic time, we don't want to create any additional burden for community members. Where appropriate, the ordinance allows individuals and businesses 72 hours to address concerns.
Before making a complaint we ask you to be a role model, follow the order, and encourage others to do the same. If you see a business out of compliance, speak with the owner, and direct them to the Marin Recovers website. If you wish to report a public health order violation by a business you can submit your concerns to SIPViolation@marincounty.org. Our personal responsibility to our community is greater now than ever. We’re all in this together and we all need to do our part.
On July 27, Dr. Lisa Santora shared with the Board of Supervisors that Color will be supporting local testing efforts. The change increases staffing capacity and test results arrive faster, within 36 hours because the organization has its own lab. This will enable earlier detection of positive cases and improve contact tracing.
There’s more good news:
- The current case rate is declining, at 234 cases per 100,000 over 14 days.
- The number of cases in San Quentin decreased from 1,105 on June 29 to 528 as of July 28.
- The Eviction Moratorium was extended to September 30.
Marin came together early as essential workers, small businesses, and families to ‘flatten the curve.’ The marathon continues. We step up, each day, to protect one another with a mask and support each other, our whole community, during these unprecedented times.

Education is the cornerstone of opportunity and this year Canal Alliance was able to support seven students for the third year in a row to qualify for college through the University Prep program.
Michael Gomez, High School Program Supervisor, is accepting congratulatory notes from community members to graduates. Join me in congratulating these grads by emailing your congratulatory note to michaelg@canalalliance.org. You can learn more about the program, the youth, and past graduates through this acknowledgment video.
