Get Ready! King Tides Arrive Later This Week;
Take Photos and Share Them with Us

The big news regarding tides is the return of King Tides late this week and early next week. Starting Sunday, November 13, and running through Wednesday of next week, King Tides are predicted to exceed 6.5 feet, and some coastal areas may experience local tidal flooding. That means it's time to heed Caltrans' Changeable Message Signs at Manzanita Park & Ride and avoid getting wet there and along Shoreline Highway.

In addition, Marin County invites you to get out to the shore and help take King Tides photos. Our objective is to leverage the power of citizen scientists to collect real-time data on inundation, flooding, erosion and other coastal change. This information will help us validate our sea level rise projections, and give us a crystal ball into the future of coastal change in California. More information can be found here.

Here's how to take and share your photos:

  • Prepare your Smart Phone: Make sure your iPhone or Android phones have location services (GPS) enabled. This can be done in Settings>Privacy on the iPhone. Or, use a regular camera.
  • Take a Photo: Go to the highest wet water line, take two steps landward, and take a photo parallel to the shoreline – ideally with some structure or other recognizable context in the background. Remember to take note of the time, date, location, and orientation of your photos to include when you upload.
  • Share with Us: Submit your picture to the California King Tides Flickr Group and/or publicly post on the Marin County Facebook page and tag with #kingtides and #marinslr. It's easiest if you use the Flickr App (for iOS or Android) on your phone. Make sure your Flickr photo sharing is set to public. You can also email photos to MarinSLR@marincounty.org

Most importantly, remember to BE SAFE!

As always, feel welcome to keep me informed about what you see and learn about King Tides at ksears@marincounty.org or call me at (415)473-7331.
