UPDATE FROM KATE: TARGET IS COMING TO SOUTHERN MARIN!

I am pleased to share the news that Target will be moving into the former Best Buy site at the Gateway Shopping Center in Marin City. This new store will benefit not only Marin City but also everyone in Southern Marin.

Most importantly, the new Target store will have a substantial grocery component, including healthy, organic and affordable food. Marin City has been without a grocery store for two decades. The lack of access to healthy and affordable food has contributed to the significant health disparities between Marin City and other communities in Marin.

I have been advocating for years, in the strongest possible way, to get a grocery store to come into the community. Finally, we have some good news! The Target store will have approximately 9,000 square feet of grocery space in the existing 48,500 square foot building. Target’s promise is to provide “Whole Foods quality at Target prices.” We like the sound of that!

In addition, the store will employ about 100 people and Target is working with us and the community to ensure that the emphasis will be on local hires, job training, and providing jobs with benefits.

We also are hopeful that an anchor store like Target will encourage other potential tenants to come in – filling every storefront with good tenants means more jobs and a more vibrant community. We look forward to partnering with Target and the Marin City community to ensure a true revitalization of the Gateway Shopping Center.
