Dear Neighbor,
I’m proud to share that our 2nd District Community Budget Project is one step closer to turning the ideas from residents into tangible resources. To help make this possible, my office is seeking nonprofit organizations to partner with us as Community Implementation Partners. These organizations will receive grants to help bring the winning proposals from our 2nd District Community Budget Project to life. These proposals were determined by the top votes from residents in the Florence-Firestone and Ladera Heights communities.
Organizations applying do not need to be based in these areas; however, they must provide services to the Florence-Firestone and Ladera Heights communities. Priority will be given to nonprofits already serving these areas. The deadline to apply is Monday, March 10. Click here to apply: http://mitchell.lacounty.gov/CB-2023.
Addressing Racial Inequities in Homelessness
Homelessness in LA County continues to disproportionately affect Black residents, who make up 31% of people experiencing homelessness despite being only 9% of the total population. The latest report from the County’s Anti-Racism, Diversity, and Inclusion Initiative (ARDI) highlights the longstanding inequities contributing to this issue, uplifts the community organizations working across all levels of government to help end homelessness, and provides recommendations on addressing historical and structural barriers to create lasting change in the fight to end homelessness. Read the full report here.
Check out the updates below for information on paid summer internship opportunities with my office, how to become a County lifeguard, ways to make your voice heard on upcoming Metro initiatives in the Florence-Firestone community and more.
Sincerely, Holly J. Mitchell Supervisor, Second District

Share the Shore - Stay Safe and Help Protect Marine Mammals
Each year, domoic acid - a natural biotoxin that comes from a type of microscopic algae - causes many marine animals to become sick on our shores. Our office is working with Marine Mammal Care Center, our Department of Beaches and Harbors and Lifeguards, to help get the word out to stay a safe distance (50 ft.) from any marine animals you see on our shores that are in distress and to call the MMCC Rescue Hotline at 1-800-39-WHALE (800-399-4253).

2nd District Beautification Project
We’re continuing our efforts to clean up streets throughout our unincorporated communities as part of the 2nd District Beautification Project. This week, Team Mitchell joined our partners at LA Trade Tech College for a design workshop with students from Lennox Academy. The students created their own landscape designs, which will be brought to life at the Lennox community garden site, that we’re revitalizing through this project.
So far, we’ve collected over 77,000 pounds of trash across our unincorporated communities. To learn more about the 2nd District Beautification Project or suggest a clean-up site, visit mitchell.lacounty.gov/beautification.
Maggie Hathaway Golf Course
The Golf Channel recently highlighted the Maggie Hathaway Golf Course in the 2nd District. Maggie Hathaway was a pioneering actor who is one of the creators of the NAACP Image Awards and was one of LA’s most well-known community and civil rights activists. In 1963 she founded the Minority Association Golfers to expand access to the sport of golf to Black residents and other communities that were systemically denied opportunities to golf due to discriminatory practices. In 1997 the 9-hole, par-3 golf course, located within Jesse Owens Community Regional Park was named in her honor and has been a cornerstone of the South Central Los Angeles community.
Last year, our office was proud to partner with LA County’s Parks Department, American Golf, and the Fore Youth Golf Foundation to celebrate the groundbreaking for a $19 million dollar restoration and revitalization project for the Maggie Hathaway Golf Course. Check out this clip from Golf Channel to learn more about Maggie Hathaway Golf course's rich history and impact.
