Dear Neighbor,
The passage of Measure G requires the county undergo governance reforms that will affect how the county’s budget and policies are created, the delivery of public services, and will usher in new elected county positions – all of which will have a direct impact on the lives of residents.
The LA County Governance Reform Task Force will guide the implementation of these significant county reforms and is currently accepting applications. The deadline for residents to apply is Friday March 7.
This week, my office, in partnership with the County's Executive Office, hosted a virtual informational community meeting on the Governance Reform Task Force to help answer questions. To check out a recording of the informational session click here.
It is imperative that diverse representatives from across our county apply to serve on the Governance Reform Task Force, to learn more and apply visit: https://measureg.lacounty.gov/
Sincerely, Holly J. Mitchell Supervisor, Second District

Addressing Homelessness: Redondo Beach Homeless Court |
|
|
This week, I was able to observe the impact of Homeless Court in Redondo Beach. I heard powerful stories of residents overcoming addiction as a result of persistent outreach and support that helped keep them out of our jails and on a path to housing.
Homeless Court acknowledges that unhoused residents that commit low-level crimes and are struggling with substance abuse and mental health challenges need to be met with the appropriate mental health care, addiction services, and other wrap-around services in order to break the cycle of incarceration to homelessness. These critical services matched with accountability, help individuals get their lives back on track and provide our unhoused residents with the support needed to stay housed.
Redondo Beach is the first city in our district to achieve Functional Zero in its efforts to address homelessness. Functional Zero means the number of unhoused residents placed in interim or permanent housing is greater than the number of people experiencing homelessness. Programs like Homeless Court help make Functional Zero possible.
Thank you to Redondo Beach and our LA County Departments who are making this life-changing program possible.

Weingart Willows Ribbon Cutting |
|
|
We celebrated the opening of Weingart Willows in Gardena, a motel that has been transformed into 52 units of permanent supportive housing. This project is one of 11 County housing sites that are part of the State’s HomeKey program. The County contributed over $16 million from our American Rescue Act Funding to help make this much-needed housing possible. It takes work across all jurisdictions to make affordable housing available to help end the homelessness crisis. Thank you to my fellow elected leaders and our County teams, including the Homeless Initiative and the Los Angeles County Development Authority. To learn more about the County’s Homeless Initiative, visit homeless.lacounty.gov.

Thank you for inviting me to recite the poem “Mothers to Son” by acclaimed playwright, poet, and social justice activist, Langston Hughes. The poem explores themes of racism and perseverance as a mother recounts to her son the obstacles she has faced. Congratulations to the talented youth musicians of ICYOLA for another inspiring performance for our communities. To learn more about ICYOLA visit, https://icyola.org/.
