This proclamation reinforces the County’s commitment to compassionate care and support for individuals and families affected by conditions, such as Alzheimer’s, other dementias, autism, and cognitive impairments, ensuring that all residents receive the assistance they need in critical times, thereby enhancing their quality of life and overall safety and well-being.

Each year, more than 369,000 incidents of financial abuse targeting older adults are reported in the United States, leading to an estimated $4.8 billion in losses. Nearly half a million older adults report falling victim to financial abuse annually, with many more cases going unreported.
Los Angeles County is committed to protecting older adults and preventing financial abuse. In line with this commitment, and following the Board of Supervisors' July 23, 2024 motion, 'Safeguarding Older Adults from Scamming Practices and Financial Abuse,' the Aging & Disabilities Department (AD) and the Department of Consumer & Business Affairs (DCBA) are leading efforts to combat elder financial fraud across the County.
It is vital for our community to recognize, avoid, and report common scams such as investment schemes, romance scams, and government impostor fraud. Education and awareness are the first lines of defense. As community leaders, business owners, and residents, we all play an essential role in helping protect older adults from these threats.

As part of our ongoing efforts, AD and DCBA are offering community workshops, caregiver training, and partnerships with local organizations, such as Bet Tzedek, to ensure a safer environment for older adults.
The next workshop will take place at the Potrero Heights Park Community and Senior Center, on October 22 at 1 p.m., in Montebello.
