Dear Neighbor,
I am proud to share about the 2nd District Beautification Project that my team has been working on in partnership with the Los Angeles Conservation Corps. This project focuses on revitalizing our unincorporated communities with the highest rates of illegal dumping and debris in our district. These include the unincorporated neighborhoods of East Rancho Dominguez, Florence-Firestone, Westmont/West-Athens, and Willowbrook.
The 2nd District Beautification Project Cleanup crew, composed of LA Conservation Corps members, many of who grew up in the district, have been working with my office on identifying and keeping our neighborhoods free of trash. As of this month, the cleanup crew has already removed 30,835 pounds of trash and 4,921 square feet of weeds since we started this initiative in May. I encourage you to check out our progress so far by visiting https://mitchell.lacounty.gov/beautificationproject/. Here, you will find an interactive map tracking the cleanup sites with more information on the work conducted and before and after pictures.

If you are interested in supporting this effort, there are different ways to get involved including volunteering at upcoming cleanups, suggesting cleanup sites, and helping with reporting bulky items or graffiti through The Works App. At the end of the project, we will create two new pocket parks to provide our communities with much-needed green space to enjoy. I look forward to continuing to share more updates on our progress.
Keeping our streets clean by not littering or illegally dumping unwanted items is our shared responsibility. Residents in our unincorporated communities should utilize The Works App or call 3-1-1 to get support for removing bulky items, reporting illegal dumping, removing graffiti, and other property-related concerns.
Thank you to everyone helping to make this project possible and to the over 100,000 county team members that serve our communities everyday. Wishing you and all the residents of the 2nd District a happy Labor Day weekend.
Sincerely, Holly J. Mitchell Supervisor, Second District

UNINCORPORATED COMMUNITY UPDATES |

Update on LA County’s Westside Area Plan
This week, my office hosted a follow-up in-person and virtual listening session on the Westside Area Plan with LA County’s Department of Regional Planning (DRP). I want to thank DRP Director Amy Bodeck and her entire team for their responsiveness to the concerns raised by Ladera Heights and surrounding communities. Changes to the LA County WSAP based on feedback received include removing Opportunity Site #1 (Centinela and Green Valley), removing Opportunity Site #10 (Angeles Vista and Valley Ridge), no rezoning along Spingpark Avenue and Fairview Blvd, and lowering the recommended height limit for Ladera Center to 45 ft (4 stories), currently LA County’s portion of the Ladera Center is zoned for 35 ft (3 stories).
The WSAP is not finalized. There is still time for additional changes to be made that best meet the needs of our communities before it comes to the Board of Supervisors in January 2025 for a vote. I, along with our county teams, consider all feedback and read the comments shared. Even though this phase of public comments has closed, there will be future opportunities for residents to weigh in on this important discussion. I appreciated hearing the concerns raised, which included but are not limited to traffic congestion and parking, and working with LA City to ensure alignment zoning guidelines for the Ladera Center.
I want to thank the over 200 residents who attended in person and the 200 who joined via Zoom, along with the members of the Ladera Heights Civic Association and the United Homeowners Association for View Park and Windsor Hills, who came out together to engage on this important topic.
You can continue to submit feedback to the County’s Regional Planning team by emailing WestsideAreaPlan@planning.lacounty.gov with the subject line “WSAP Comments".

Fire Safety at Dockweiler Beach
Not using one of the 80 fire pits provided at Dockkweiler Beach and instead starting a fire on the beach is illegal and considered an open fire. There has been an increasing number of beachgoers starting open fires and injuring themselves and others. As beachgoers floak to Dockweiler and other beaches this holiday weekend we are asking you to adhere to the signs that say No Fires Allowed and other postings to keep our beaches safe and fun for everyone to enjoy.
