CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF IN-HOME SUPPORTIVE SERVICES

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF IN-HOME SUPPORTIVE SERVICES

This year, the California Department of Social Services (CDSS) In-Home Supportive Services Program (IHSS) is celebrating over 50 years of enriching communities by improving the well-being and independence of older adults residing in counties across the state.

Serving as an alternative to nursing homes or board and care facilities, IHSS provides personal care and domestic services to eligible low-income residents, older adults, and people with disabilities, so they can live independently and remain safely in their own homes.

Established nearly 70 years ago to financially support California residents who needed to hire their own caregivers, IHSS now serves over 730,000 recipients statewide, allowing them the option to select and hire care providers of their own choice.

The County of Los Angeles and other California counties are celebrating this important occasion by sharing program information and personal stories from recipients about how IHSS has assisted them with challenges to living independently. DPSS will use its communications platforms to highlight pivotal moments from the past five decades and inform the public about the ongoing collective efforts toward building a California for all ages and abilities.

Listen to a message from CDSS Director Kim Johnson, and testimonies from IHSS recipients.
