Women’s History Month – Los Angeles’ Very Own Distinguished Women in Medicine
We are highlighting some of the prominent Los Angeles Women in Medicine in honor of Women’s History Month.
Dr. Elizabeth A. Follansbee (1839-1917), is the first woman physician in Los Angeles, according to the American Medical Association.

Follansbee started medical school at the University of California in San Francisco but transferred to University of Michigan Medical School because it was more accepting of female students. She earned her medical license in 1877, returned to San Francisco, and worked at the woman-founded Children's Hospital of San Francisco.
Female physicians were not accepted by male peers at this time but were tolerated only if they limited their treatment to women and children.
Follansbee moved to Los Angeles in 1883, for health reasons, and joined the inaugural faculty, as a professor of pediatrics, at USC’s new medical school in 1885. She was the first female faculty member at a medical school in California. Among her pioneering efforts was to arrange for female USC medical graduates to intern at Children's Hospital in San Francisco because it was the only West Coast hospital that accepted female interns and residents.
Dr. Follansbee died at Los Angeles County Hospital and was known for “her liberality and friendship to any woman in distress." She had given away most of her income to charity.
A Message from the Workforce Well-Being Team
Thank you to everyone across LA Health Services for contributing to the amazing accomplishments in 2022, despite the challenges, the uncertainty, and in some cases, chaos. Since many of you are often running against the clock and moving from task-to-task, there often isn't much time to reflect upon how much you have accomplished. No matter what your role is, "big" or "small", each and every action, each and every task, each and every smile has a domino or ripple effect that we often do not see.
