LA County Moves into Low Community Level
As of last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have moved LA County into the Low Community Level. This reflects minimal stress on the hospital system in LA County associated with COVID-19. However, viral transmission remains high, with a case rate just below 200 as of Tuesday, September 6, which represents about 2,500 new cases a day. With more K-12 schools starting the new school year, there have been increases in the number of clusters of cases and outbreaks at schools.
To help further reduce the rate of transmission at schools and in the community, residents should continue to follow simple safety measures such as staying home when sick; testing after an exposure; universal masking indoors when around others and for 10 days after an exposure; and being up to date on vaccinations.

Vaccinations remain the best defense against severe COVID-19 illness and hospitalization. The new Pfizer and Moderna boosters that target the BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants of Omicron were approved last week by both the Food and Drug Administration and the CDC. The new booster vaccines are also referred to as “updated boosters” or “bivalent boosters.”
The CDC recommends that everyone who is eligible get an updated booster dose at least 2 months after their last COVID-19 shot—either since their last booster dose, or since completing their primary series. Pfizer’s updated booster shot is authorized for individuals 12 and older, and Moderna’s is authorized for adults 18 and older.
|
Residents and workers in LA County can now receive the updated bivalent booster at more than 900 sites across the county. LA County should begin administering these free vaccines on Wednesday, September 7th at 12 Public Health sites, 701 mobile vaccine clinics, and 245 community, pharmacy, and clinic sites.
To find a location for the new booster, go to VaccinateLACounty.com. Click on “Find a Location” and then search by “Vaccine Type”.
For those who have questions about vaccine safety and effectiveness, please contact your healthcare provider or call our DPH Call Center at 1-833-540-0473 between the hours of 8:00am and 8:30pm, seven days a week.

The Health Officer Order for the Control of COVID-19 - Public Health Emergency Isolation Order has been revised, effective Thursday 9/1/22, clarifying the following:
- If a person's COVID-19 symptoms recur or worsen after ending isolation, they should isolate again, as they may have COVID-19 rebound. Isolation for COVID-19 rebound can end 5 days after the rebound symptoms began, as long as they have been fever-free for at least 24 hours AND their symptoms are improving.
In LA County, a person with COVID-19 can exit isolation on or after Day 6 if they have had no fever for 24 hours, their symptoms are improving, and a test taken on Day 5 or later is negative. Those exiting isolation Day 6 - Day 10 should continue to wear a well-fitting mask whenever around others. Isolation can end after Day 10 if there has been no fever for 24 hours.
See ph.lacounty.gov/covidisolation for more information.
