Statement on Assaults Alleged in Lawsuit from Probation Oversight Commission Vice Chair Esche Jackson
Los Angeles, CA – The Los Angeles County Probation Oversight Commission is aware of long-standing problems within the county’s juvenile halls and camps that impact youth safety and successful rehabilitation and reentry.
“The latest allegations of sexual abuse against female minors in Probation custody bring new meaning to the notion that what happens in the dark must come to light. With full awareness of the sexual abuse to prison pipeline that young women disproportionately travel, it casts an especially bright light on gender-based crimes committed against our most vulnerable youth that compounds trauma and narrows the likelihood of rehabilitation and healing. It undermines our trust in the Department’s ability to protect young women and reinforces the need for youth justice reimagined.
The Probation Oversight Commission will do everything in its power to find the facts, hold responsible persons accountable, and prevent these horrifying acts from reoccurring. The Commission will investigate said allegations by holding hearings to hear directly from victims and advocates.
Our youth have the right to be safe. They deserve to have access to resources to improve their lives and not be resources for sexual gratification."
