Los Angeles County Enters Post-Surge Period
On Wednesday, February 16, LA County entered its post-surge period after daily COVID-19 hospitalizations remained below 2,500 for seven consecutive days. An updated LA County Health Officer Order was released, recommending, but no longer requiring, masking for attendees at outdoor mega events, and while outdoors at TK-12 schools, youth sports, or childcare settings.
LA County also launched post-surge strategies for COVID-19 case investigation, including a new text messaging option. Residents who test positive for COVID-19 will now receive an initial text message from LA County Department of Public Health with easy-to-follow:
- Instructions for isolation
- Instructions requesting to complete an online case interview survey within 8 days
- Links for additional information
Public Health will continue to maintain a call center for residents who test positive where they can receive information and support. Residents can call 1-833-540-0473 seven days a week from 8:00 am to 8:30 pm.
If you have been exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19, continue following LA County DPH Quarantine Protocols.

As of January 22, 2022, there have been 277 cases of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) reported in LA County. MIS-C is a rare inflammatory condition associated with COVID-19 that can damage multiple organ systems. MIS-C can require hospitalization and be life-threatening.
Children and teens can get MIS-C during or after having COVID-19. The best way to protect them from MIS-C is to take everyday actions to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in your home and community. These practices include:
- Getting eligible children vaccinated & boosted. The COVID-19 vaccine is 91% effective at preventing MIS-C.
- Ensuring children and teens wear a mask that offers the best protection when in school and in public settings.
- Staying home and getting tested for COVID-19 if you're sick.
- Ventilating indoor spaces and socializing outdoors when possible. Read more on improving ventilation in your home here.
- Following public health travel guidelines. Read more on travel advisory here.
