Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine for Children 5-11 Years Old Now Approved
Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine has been approved under Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for children aged 5-11. Nationwide, 8,300 children in this age group have been hospitalized due to COVID-19 and nearly 100 children have died. In LA County, since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been more than 200,000 cases among children and teens. Infection trends in children follow infection trends in adults.
Children may now get vaccinated at select, walk-up clinics countywide – please call the site ahead of time to check availability. Visit VaccinateLACounty.com to find sites that are offering vaccination for children. If you have questions or concerns, speak with your child’s doctor or call 2-1-1 to be connected to a healthcare provider.

As of November 2, 2021, LA County Department of Public Health has provided the framework for lifting masking requirements at events and indoor establishments.
For outdoor mega events involving more than 10,000 people, Public Health outlined that before masking requirements are lifted, all of the following criteria need to be met:
- LA County case rates must demonstrate three consecutive weeks at or below moderate transmission as defined by the CDC – that is, less than 50 new weekly cases per 100,000 residents
- Hospitalizations must remain low and stable at or below 600 daily COVID-19 hospitalizations for three consecutive weeks
- 80% or more of county residents 12 and older must be fully vaccinated
- There must be no emerging reports of significantly circulating new variants of concern that threaten vaccine effectiveness
For masking requirements to be lifted at indoor events or establishments involving fewer than 1,000 people, including indoor offices and worksites:
- Sites must have a vaccination verification process in place
- All employees and customers must be fully vaccinated with some exceptions
- LA County metrics must meet all of the same standards as for lifting masking requirements at outdoor mega events
Indoor masking will remain mandatory due to federal and state requirements at the following:
- Public transit and transportation hubs (federal)
- TK-12 schools, childcare, and youth settings
- Healthcare settings
- Correctional facilities
- Homeless and emergency shelters and cooling centers
- Indoor mega events involving more than 1,000 people (state)

Although COVID-19 metrics continue to decrease slightly, the rate of decrease is slowing, suggesting that we are reaching a plateau in transmission. With transmission remaining significant, along with seasonal activities moving indoors and holiday travel and celebrations, it remains important for us to maintain additional layers of protection.
This includes masking up indoors and in crowded outdoor spaces, getting vaccinated and obtaining a booster dose when eligible.

Current Vaccination Requirements
REMINDER: All customers and onsite employees at indoor portions of bars, wineries, breweries, night clubs, and lounges must be fully vaccinated by this Thursday, November 4. For more information about the LA County Department Public Health Officer Order, click here.
