COVID-19 Hospitalizations Nearly Double in Two Weeks
In the past two weeks, Los Angeles County has seen a near-doubling in the number of people hospitalized each day for COVID-19 illness. Most of the increase has been among unvaccinated individuals, while hospitalizations remain very low among vaccinated people.
Throughout this pandemic, people who live with chronic illnesses have suffered serious outcomes of COVID-19 infection. Because chronic diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity dramatically increase the risk of getting severely ill or dying with COVID-19 infection, vaccination is particularly important for people living with these conditions.
Everyone 12 and older living or working in LA County is eligible for vaccination and is urged to get vaccinated, especially if you have any chronic health conditions. Please talk with your healthcare provider if you have concerns about getting vaccinated. Vaccinations are widely available throughout LA County and many sites are open on weekends and have evening hours. Vaccinations are always free and open to eligible residents and workers regardless of immigration status.

COVID-19 cases are going up across the US, and most are caused by the Delta variant. Delta is more than twice as contagious as other strains. It’s more important than ever to get vaccinated and protect you and your family from severe disease, hospitalization, and death.
 To learn more, click here.

LA County is seeing a surge in cases because of the more infectious Delta variant and gatherings of unmasked individuals where vaccination status is unknown. To slow the spread, masks are required in indoor public spaces regardless of vaccination status. Mask up & stay safe!
Wearing a mask indoors is crucial regardless of your vaccination status because:
- The Delta variant is highly infectious, especially indoors, and some vaccinated people can get and transmit COVID-19 to others.
- Masking is an extra layer of protection that keeps you, your loved ones, and your community safe.

 Question:
Why are vaccines the best way to reach community immunity? (Even if you already had COVID-19)?
Answer:
For COVID-19, we cannot rely on natural immunity because:
- More people could get sick or die before community immunity is reached.
- Any delays increase the chance of new COVID-19 variants spreading quickly and taking hold.
- Natural immunity (from already having COVID-19) may not last long enough or be strong enough, and people could get infected again.
