Johnson & Johnson (J&J) / Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine Information

Environmental Health

Food and Agriculture Partners,

Out of an abundance of caution, Los Angeles County is following the recommendation of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to pause the use of Johnson & Johnson vaccine after reports that 6 women between the ages of 18 and 48 developed unusual types of blood clots 6 to 13 days after receiving the vaccine. These reactions are extremely rare, as nearly 7,000,000 people have received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in the United States to date. This pause will last until the FDA and CDC complete their review, which is expected to take several days.

We understand that this may have caused anxiety for those that have recently received the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) / Janssen COVID-19 vaccine or have upcoming vaccine appointments.

If you received the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) / Janssen COVID-19 vaccine:

  • Over a month ago: The risk to you is very low at this time
  • In the last few weeks: You should look out for any symptoms of these unusual clots. If you develop severe headache, abdominal pain, leg pain, shortness of breath, or any other concerning symptoms or health problems, you should contact your healthcare provider and seek medical treatment. People who don't have a medical provider can call 2-1-1 to connect with a healthcare provider.

For those that have upcoming appointments to receive the J&J / Janssen COVID-19 vaccine, vaccine providers in Los Angeles County will contact patients about rescheduling or providing an appointment for Pfizer or Moderna vaccine.

It is important to remember that we are not seeing these adverse events with Moderna and Pfizer vaccines. People who have vaccine appointments with these two vaccines should continue with their appointment.

We are grateful to the researchers and scientists working to ensure that all medications or vaccines, including the COVID-19 vaccines, have the highest safety standards.

Kind regards,
