Dear Friends –
Two weeks ago, I sent a letter to President Joe Biden requesting a federally-supported community vaccination center in the First District, and, soon, there will be one at Cal State LA!
I am grateful to President Biden and Governor Newsom for answering my call and marshaling federal and state resources to significantly increase our ability to vaccinate our residents. Our County and in particular our Latinx residents have been absolutely devastated by COVID-19. Establishing this large scale federal-state community vaccination center on the Cal State LA campus, in the heart of Los Angeles County and in a hard-hit community, is a welcome signal that we are ramping up at the federal, state and local level with the practical, boots-on-the-ground solutions we need to put an end to this deadly pandemic.
We hope to bring this center live beginning February 16. Registration for vaccination appointments will be available through the state’s MyTurn scheduling system in the coming days. Residents without internet access can call (833) 540-0473 for assistance.
The new vaccination center will be paired with two mobile vaccination clinics – which can integrate with our public health teams to reach vulnerable residents throughout the County.
The COVID-19 vaccine is the only way we will start to rebuild the overwhelming economic and personal losses that so many of our residents have experienced during this crisis. By augmenting our five large County-run sites and network of nearly 300 vaccination locations across the County, this new federal-state community vaccination center will increase capacity by thousands of vaccinations a day.
Real solutions are in place, and hope is at hand.
We must continue to work together to urgently increase our supply of vaccines and ensure that our most heavily impacted communities have access to live-saving vaccinations.
Sincerely,
Chair Hilda L. Solis
Supervisor, First District
This morning, I visited by my alma mater, Cal Poly Pomona, for the launch of a COVID-19 Vaccination Hub in partnership with Kaiser Permanente and other healthcare organizations including Adventist Health, the California Medical Association, Dignity Health, and Futuro Health.
This site is starting with 500 vaccines a day and will eventually scale up to 10,000 each day – vaccinating healthcare workers and people 65 years of age and older. Appointments for the next few days are fully booked, but more appointment slots will be released in the coming days. Appointments are required and can be made using the state’s MyTurn scheduling system or by calling (833) 540-0473 for assistance.
This increased supply requires all of us to make sure our neighbors, our community is ready to get the vaccine when it’s available. Please start socializing it. We do not want to get to a point where we have too much vaccine and too few people who want it. So please, if you get the vaccine, call your neighbor, let someone you love know it is worth it.
One of the many things that we have to do a little differently this year is watching the Super Bowl. Even though our case rates are slowing down, community transmission remains very high, and our hospitals are still near capacity. With the new COVID-19 variants, getting together to watch the game is more dangerous than ever. It only takes one game – one gathering – to unravel our progress. Please, keep yourself and your loved ones safe by staying home and limiting your Super Bowl parties to people in your household only.
