FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 4, 2020
LOS ANGELES, CA – Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Hilda L. Solis, Supervisor to the First District, in partnership with the County’s Department of Health Services and CORE (Community Organized Relief Effort), announces the opening of a pop-up COVID-19 walk-up testing site at Raul R. Perez Memorial Park, 6208 Alameda St., in Huntington Park.
The Southeast Los Angeles region has experienced a high volume of cases since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic 10 months ago. Many residents from this area are essential workers who work at industrial facilities and manufacturing plants in nearby Vernon. This testing site will help slow the spread of COVID-19 in Southeast Los Angeles by identifying individuals who need to isolate and receive medical care. The new testing site opens Tuesday.
“The COVID-19 crisis is the worst it has been,” said Chair Solis. “This past week, Los Angeles County surpassed the tragic milestone of 10,000 confirmed deaths from this virus. So long as COVID-19 continues to spread among communities in the First District, I will continue to prioritize expanded access to testing.”
Tests are free and proof of medical insurance is not required. All on-site testing will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Jan. 5–9.
“It is estimated that 1 person is currently dying of COVID-19 every 10 minutes in Los Angeles County,” added Chair Solis. “And we are still bracing for the impacts associated with Christmas and New Year’s gatherings. I urge everyone to please join me in my New Year’s Resolution – abiding by the Health Officer Order fully. Let’s meet the moment to reduce transmission and exposure. Doing so will help save lives.”
“The pop-up testing sites will expand community testing capacity and help Los Angeles County test more people who may have been exposed to COVID-19 over the holidays,” said Dr. Clemens Hong, with the Department of Health Services, who oversees COVID-19 testing for Los Angeles County. “Hospitals across LA County were inundated in December. We need to take the pressure off our hospitals by making sure anyone who has COVID-19 self-isolates and does not transmit the virus to others.”
“Testing is an important part of our overall strategy to slow the spread of COVID-19 and protect our residents,” Hong added. “Everyone also needs to stay home as much as possible.”
Appointments are required and can be scheduled by visiting https://curative.com/sites/17308#9/34.0856/-117.9647.
With the addition of this testing site, Chair Solis has launched three testing sites in the region since the very beginning of the crisis: Bell, Huntington Park, and South Gate – the latter serving as one of the County’s high-volume testing sites.
