Press Release: Public Health Reports 43 New Deaths and 1,115 New Positive Cases of Confirmed COVID-19 in Los Angeles County; New MIS-C Cases in Children Confirmed

Public Health Reports 43 New Deaths and 1,115 New Positive Cases of Confirmed COVID-19 in Los Angeles County

New MIS-C Cases in Children Confirmed

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) has confirmed 43 new deaths and 1,115 new cases of confirmed COVID-19. To date, Public Health has identified 252,066 positive cases of COVID-19 across all areas of L.A. County, and a total of 6,171 deaths.

The number of daily hospitalizations continues to decline. There are 889 confirmed cases currently hospitalized and 33% of these people are confirmed cases in the ICU. Similar to the numbers seen in early April, daily hospitalizations have dropped back to an average of under 1,000 hospitalizations a day.

Public Health also reports three new cases of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). This brings the total number of MIS-C case in L.A. County to 34 children.

All 34 children with MIS-C in L.A. County were hospitalized and 45% of the children were treated in the ICU. Twenty-seven percent of these cases were between the ages of 0 and 4 years old, 38% were between the ages of 5 and 11 years old, and 35% were between the ages of 12 and 20 years old. Latino/Latinx children continue to make up the majority of cases accounting for 71% of all cases. There have been no reported deaths in children with MIS-C in L.A. County.

MIS-C is a rare inflammatory condition associated with COVID-19 that can damage multiple organ systems. MIS-C can require hospitalization and be life threatening. Parents and guardians are urged to contact their child's primary care provider if they believe their child is displaying MIS-C symptoms, including fever that does not go away, inflamed body parts, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes, or gastrointestinal organs. If they do not have a primary care provider, dial 2-1-1 and L.A. County will help connect them to one.

"Today, as we remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001 and extend our gratitude to all the first responders for their courage and service, we also take a solemn pause to pay respect to the 6,171 people who lost their lives to COVID-19 in L.A. County and reflect on our heroic healthcare workers that have responded selflessly to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our Country came together after 9/11 and forged a new path forward; today, we have also been asked to come together and learn how to live through the COVID-19 pandemic. We give thanks to all who helped us get through the devastation brought by 9/11, and to all who are helping us get through COVID-19."

Of the 43 new deaths reported today (excluding Long Beach and Pasadena), 18 people that passed away were over the age of 80, 12 people who died were between the ages of 65 and 79 years old, eight people who died were between the ages of 50 and 64 years old, one person who died was between the ages of 30 and 49 years old, and one person who died was between the ages of 18 and 29 years old. Thirty people had underlying health conditions including 14 people over the age of 80 years old, nine people between the ages of 65 and 79 years old, five people between the ages of 50 and 64 years old, one person between the ages of 30 and 49, and one person between the ages of 18 to 29 years old. Three deaths were reported by the City of Long Beach.

Ninety-two percent of the people who died from COVID-19 had underlying health conditions. Of those who died, information about race and ethnicity is available for 5,806 people (99 percent of the cases reported by Public Health); 51% of deaths occurred among Latino/Latinx residents, 23% among White residents, 15% among Asian residents, 10% among African American/Black residents, less than 1% among Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander residents and 1% among residents identifying with other races.

Testing results are available for nearly 2,419,000 individuals with 10% of all people testing positive. Upon further investigation, 73 cases reported earlier were not L.A. County residents.
