The second phase of work to plug a 1930s-era oil well will continue over the weekend. During this phase, which the well contractor anticipates will last about four weeks, crews will pump about 750 feet of cement into the well and the empty space around it to create five cement plugs. Workers will also install a mechanical plug.
There will be no overnight work during this time, and no cement pouring before 7 a.m. Noisy work activities will be restricted to daylight hours, and testing will occur in the evening.
Air quality monitoring continues to take place every 90 minutes during daylight operations.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, Los Angeles County Fire Department – Health Hazardous Materials Division, and the California Division of Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources continue to monitor the well site.
A tank containing groundwater on Via Marina overflowed on the afternoon of Thursday, March 29, 2019, due to a plugged drain line. Crews opened the drain and pumped the excess water to resolve the issue. This incident was unrelated to well plugging activities.
The Community Health, Safety and Notification Plan for well plugging activities is available on the Department of Conservation’s website at https://www.conservation.ca.gov/dog/Pages/DOW-RGC10-well.aspx.
