Uncontrolled Release of Gas from Vintage Oil Well in Marina Del Rey
Public Health Issues Recommendations to Protect Health
LOS ANGELES – Today, the California Department of Conservation – Division of Gas and Geothermal Resources (DOGGR) issued an order following last week’s release of gas from a vintage well that was being brought into compliance with current standards at a construction site in Marina Del Rey. The order places significant controls to minimize the risk of a future natural gas release as the project moves forward.
In response to this development, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) has issued recommendations to DOGGR, who has authority over the work with the well, that will further safeguard the health of residents in the surrounding community.
Public Health has requested that DOGGR require the development of a Community Health and Safety Plan to ensure that the public is fully aware of the construction and mitigation activities, the safety precautions governing those activities, the monitoring of chemical emissions at the site, the method to notify the community of any significant developments, and strategies to address any concerns from the public.
Public Health is also asking State officials to provide all monitoring data generated to date by the responsible party or State officials, and that all current and future monitoring data be communicated to Public Health as it is produced.
Questions about the well and abandonment process should be directed to DOGGR: (916) 323-6733 or https://www.conservation.ca.gov.
