The Los Angeles County Probation Department is coordinating a Parent
Resource Fair Saturday, August 25 to provide a “one-stop shop” of resources and
valuable information about services available to parents and guardians of youth
who are currently in juvenile justice or correctional programs. While many of
the resources will be geared to parents of youth who are justice-involved,
parents and community members are welcome to attend.
Community outreach representatives from a variety of
public agencies will be available to share information on their services such
as: mental, physical, and public health
services, parenting classes, domestic violence counseling, art and music
opportunities, recreation happenings, summer internships/mentoring programs,
gang prevention, job/vocational training, life skills workshops, health
insurance for undocumented families, employment opportunities for
probationers/parolees, and LGBTQ support groups. Parents who attend can expect to walk away
from the event with the tools necessary to not only best support their child,
but also get advice, helpful tips, guidance, and assistance to strengthen and
support the rest of the family.
The Parent Resource Fair is the result of the many
questions raised by parents and guardians who attend family counseling meetings
that take place at the County’s three juvenile halls. During these meetings, parents have expressed
a desire to have a more centralized location where they can find the services
they need. It is the Probation
Department’s goal to connect these families with the organizations who provide
the types of assistance that are available to them through outreach and
rehabilitation. Parent Resource Fairs
will also take place at Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall (Sylmar) and Los Padrinos
Juvenile Hall (Downey) later this year.
Though interviews and B-roll footage of the event are
highly encouraged, the Probation Department respectfully ask that media please
consider the privacy of the families participating in the fair.
