42nd Irvine Annual Opens July 11
The Irvine Annual juried exhibition showcases artworks from local and regional artists ages 18 and older who work across multiple visual artistic mediums. The Irvine Annual exhibition opens Saturday, July 11, with a free opening reception from 2 to 4 p.m., featuring an opportunity to meet the artists, enjoy light bites, and live music.
This year’s exhibition brings together work in painting, photography, fiber, and mixed media, along with material-based practices that push familiar forms in new directions. Across the selection, artists explore how images and objects are built, how materials carry meaning, and how process shapes interpretation.
Together, the works offer a broad view of contemporary art today — diverse in approach, grounded in experimentation, and connected through a shared interest in how form and material interact.
Irvine Annual will be on view through September 5.

GAME! Dunk Show, Demos & Basketball Giveaway
Celebrate the newly renovated mural-covered basketball courts at the Great Park Sunday, July 26, from 1 to 3 p.m. during a free, family-friendly event inspired by the Great Park Gallery exhibition, GAME! Basketball and Contemporary Art.
Designed by California artist Katy Ann Gilmore in collaboration with Project Backboard, the vibrant court surfaces set the stage for an afternoon of basketball challenges, live entertainment, and interactive activities. Kids, teens, and adults can test their skills at demo challenge stations led by experienced coaches. Participants will receive a free custom basketball featuring the artist's designs while supplies last.
With a live DJ, a professional dunk show, and activities celebrating the connection between basketball, community, and contemporary art, this event is free and open to all ages. No registration is required. A limited supply of 300 custom basketballs will be available, with one ball per participant while supplies last.

Make a Splash Safely This Summer

The City of Irvine is helping residents make water safety a priority this summer through the Super Swim Lesson and Floatie Exchange at William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center Friday, July 10, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
The event will feature water safety education, swim lessons beginning at 6 p.m., and a free recreation swim with a waterslide, giant inflatables, diving boards, and a poolside showing of Shark Tale at dusk.
Families can also trade inflatable arm floaties and other non-approved flotation devices for a properly fitted, U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket.
The Super Swim Lesson is open to children ages 3 and older. Lifeguards will be on duty, and children ages 6 and younger must be accompanied in the water on a one-to-one basis by an adult.

Residents are invited to join the City of Irvine and nonprofit OC Goes Solar for a free virtual Solarize Irvine workshop Wednesday, July 15, at 7 p.m. to learn about financing options and group-discounted pricing for solar, battery storage, heat pumps, and EV charging equipment in Irvine.
The workshop will provide an overview of the program, introduce participating installers, and explain how residents can explore options for reducing home energy costs and utility bills.

Great Park Live Hosts FIFA World Cup Watch Party Series

Experience the excitement of the FIFA World Cup at Great Park Live during a series of free watch parties featuring matches on large LED screens. Gates open one hour before kickoff, with food and beverages available for purchase. Admission is free and limited to the first 1,000 guests.
Upcoming watch parties include Spain vs. Belgium Friday, July 10, Norway vs. England and Argentina vs. Switzerland Saturday, July 11, and additional knockout-round matches July 14, 15, 18, and 19. Guests are welcome to bring blankets and low-back chairs, while a limited number of complimentary chairs will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Summer in the City Continues with Movies and Music

Enjoy free, family-friendly entertainment during the City of Irvine's Summer in the City series. Catch A Minecraft Movie Friday, July 17, or How to Train Your Dragon (2025) Friday, July 24, at Hicks Canyon Community Park. Food trucks open at 6:30 p.m., and movies begin after sunset.
Then, Saturday, July 18, enjoy live music from Jukebox, a Top 40 band, at Mike Ward Community Park — Woodbridge. The concert begins at 5:30 p.m.
Guests are encouraged to bring low-back chairs, blankets, and picnic-style treats, or purchase refreshments from on-site food trucks. All events are free, with no tickets or registration required.
