National Mosquito Awareness Week

|

As temperatures rise, so does the threat of mosquito-borne disease. That’s why National Mosquito Awareness Week, June 15 through 21, coincides with the beginning of summer.
Mosquitoes may be small and silent, but even a tiny amount of standing water can become a breeding ground. Help prevent mosquitoes before they start by dumping standing water and checking your yard weekly.
Mosquito control works best when the community works together. Learn more at the Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District.

June 14: Flag Day
Flag Day is observed annually June 14 to commemorate the adoption of the United States flag in 1777. The original design featured 13 alternating red and white stripes and 13 white stars on a blue field representing the nation’s first states.
The City of Irvine is proud to recognize Flag Day and participate in the America 250 commemoration through community displays that celebrate our nation’s history. As part of the City’s 100 Flags Program, American flags were installed at 128 pole locations throughout Irvine beginning May 4. Displayed along major corridors and in public spaces, the flags promote civic pride throughout the community and honor those who have served our nation.
Did you know? Irvine offers two American flag retirement boxes where worn or damaged flags can be properly disposed of with respect and care.
One flag retirement box is located at Northwood Community Park, next to the Community Center entrance, on the playground side of the building. The box was established in 2015 by Gianluca Allesina of Irvine Boy Scout Troop 616 as part of his Eagle Scout Service Project.
A second flag retirement box is located at Irvine City Hall, adjacent to the entrance to the Irvine Police Department.
