Saturday, April 18, 11 a.m.–2 p.m. Quail Hill Community Center, 39 Shady Canyon Drive, Irvine
Celebrate Earth Day at Quail Hill Community Center with guided hikes, a composting demo, and interactive activities and presentations offered by the City of Irvine and partner agencies:
OC Goes Solar: Electric stovetop demonstration at 11:30 a.m.
Irvine Ranch Conservancy: Guided hikes on Quail Hill Loop Trail will be offered at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Registration is required on-site, with limited space available.
Compost Demo: An interactive demonstration at noon offers easy and effective tips for starting a compost.

Orange County Waste & Recycling will hold a meeting regarding the Frank R. Bowerman Landfill. Residents are invited to attend and share their concerns and ask questions.
We encourage you to submit your questions in advance — responses will be provided following the meeting. The Zoom session will also be recorded and made available online for later viewing.

The workshop will dive into what home electrification can look like for both renters and owners by hosting speakers and experts to explain the importance of switching from gas to electric appliances, vehicles, and other items. It will highlight why going electric can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and how that action ties into City goals.

Single-Use Utensils & Condiments Now By Request Only
To reduce single-use plastic waste, California law, AB 1276, now limits the distribution of disposable foodware. Food facilities are no longer allowed to automatically include utensils and condiments in your order unless you ask for them.

Community Recycling Update: Paper and Plastic Cups Are Now Welcome
WM now accepts paper and plastic cups in your recycling program! This exciting update is part of a national initiative with major brands and sustainability stakeholders to make to-go cups widely recyclable across the country.

 Community Guidance Around Sustainable Swaps
City staff presented survey results to the Irvine City Council about single-use plastic reduction efforts in the Irvine food service business industry. This community data collection brings Irvine one step closer toward reducing single-use plastics where possible. Please check out our Plastic Alternative Guide for sustainable alternatives!
Businesses can also use Irvine’s Foodware Calculator to discover how much money is being spent on disposable utensils, plates, bowls, cups, etc., and compare that against the potential total cost of switching to reusable items.

Go Green! Become an Irvine Green Business
The City of Irvine Green Business Program offers a FREE Green Business Certification for Irvine businesses and nonprofits. Benefits include up to $500 in rebates, free green business consulting, and City of Irvine recognition that showcases your commitment to a greener Irvine and helps improve your business’s efficiency, profitability, and sustainability.
Congratulations to the 17 Irvine Green Businesses that completed important energy-efficiency projects funded by the Orange County Power Authority and Calpine Community Energy grant, administered by the Irvine Green Business Program.

Cool Irvine Environmental Art Contest
Irvine students in grades K–6 are invited to participate in the Cool Irvine Environmental Art Contest and showcase their creativity by illustrating "Small Heroes, Big Impact." Create artwork that shows kids taking everyday actions to care for the Earth.
Prizes include $100 for first place, $75 for second, and $50 for third — plus a $75 gift card for the winning student's teacher! Winners and selected submissions will be displayed at Irvine City Hall, and winners will be recognized in a special ceremony at City Hall.
The deadline for submisssions is March 27.
