Community Recycling Update: Paper and Plastic Cups Are Now Welcome!
Waste Management (WM) now accepts paper and plastic cups in their recycling program! This exciting update is part of a national initiative with major brands and sustainability stakeholders to make to-go cups widely recyclable across the country.
WM does accept:
- Hot and cold beverage paper cups (e.g., coffee cups with sleeves and soda cups)
- Plastic cups made from polypropylene (PP) (e.g., cold drink cups for soda and
iced coffee)
WM does NOT accept:
- Foam cups (Styrofoam)
- Rigid polystyrene (#6)
- Lids, straws, and stoppers
How to prepare cups for recycling:
- Empty all liquids
- Remove straws, stoppers, and food

Holiday Tree Recycling
Starting December 26, WM will collect Christmas trees for three weeks at no extra cost. Place your undecorated tree at the curb or cut it to fit in your green waste cart with the lid closed.
Holiday tree recycling reminder:
- Trees over 6 feet must be cut in half
- Remove all decorations, lights, and stands
- Flocked trees will be collected but not recycled
No curbside service? Drop trees off for free at Sunset Environmental (16122 Construction Circle West). Bring proof of Irvine residency. Open Monday–Friday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. from December 26 to January 15 (closed New Year’s Day).

Free Paper Shredding
Saturday, January 24, 9–11 a.m. Lakeview Senior Center, 20 Lake Road
In partnership with the City of Irvine, WM is hosting a free paper-shredding event Saturday, January 24, 9–11 a.m. at Lakeview Senior Center. Irvine residents can safely and securely dispose of up to five banker-size file boxes. The event is first-come, first-served, and will end early if the truck's capacity is reached. Customers who wish to watch their paper be shredded will need to park in a designated area away from the truck and staff.

Compost & Mulch Available at OC Landfills
Looking for STA Certified compost and/or mulch in Orange County? Compost and mulch are currently FREE from Bee Canyon Greenery at Frank R. Bowerman Landfill in Irvine. OC Waste & Recycling is accepting requests for compost and/or mulch from Orange County residents, commercial businesses, local cities, and government agencies. Compost and mulch are available to residents in a self-serve area; shovels and containers are not provided, so please bring your own.
To schedule an appointment to pick up compost/mulch, be sure to select the preferred service location (Bee Canyon).

 Irvine Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center Will Remain Open
The City of Irvine and OC Waste & Recycling are partnering to extend the Irvine Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center’s license for up to one year while a new permanent site is identified. The Center will remain open at its current location until further notice. For more information, visit OClandfills.com/notice.
