Roadway Improvements and Traffic Advisories

September 24–October 1, 2025

Harvard Avenue & Michelson Drive
Intersection Improvements

The City will be removing and replacing asphalt pavement, curb and gutter, curb ramps, and sidewalk, and modifying traffic signal equipment at the intersection of Harvard Avenue and Michelson Drive Monday, September 29, through May 2026.

Work will occur Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. behind temporary traffic control delineators and permanent K-rail lane closures.

This intersection widening project will enhance traffic flow through the intersection and improve signal timing coordination along the Harvard Avenue and Michelson Drive corridors. The project is anticipated to be complete in fall 2026.

Traffic Advisory Near the Great Park 

The City's fifth annual Mid-Autumn Festival will take place at the Great Park Friday, September 26, from 5 to 9:30 p.m. Please anticipate increased traffic around the park throughout the evening as this event is expected to bring approximately 15,000 people to the park.

If you are planning to attend the event, please view the parking map and allow sufficient time for event arrival and parking.


Street Rehabilitation & Slurry Seal in the Great Park Neighborhoods

The City has begun pavement rehabilitation and slurry seal of public streets in the Great Park Neighborhoods. Work for this project includes the application of slurry seal and striping enhancements along Pusan Way. In addition, Irvine Ranch Water District will be included in this project to reset manhole and water valve covers to grade on repaved streets.

Work began September 15 and is expected to be complete this fall.

Crews will be working weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Every effort will be made to complete this essential work quickly to minimize inconvenience to the community.

Pusan

Street Rehabilitation & Slurry Seal Project

The City has begun pavement rehabilitation and slurry seal of public streets in the College Park, Colony Deerfield, and Hearthstone neighborhoods. Work for this project includes concrete upgrades to sidewalks, curb ramps, and driveways, followed by pavement rehabilitation and slurry seal on arterial, local, and residential streets.

Phase 1 began September 15 and is expected to be complete this winter.

Crews will be working weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on residential streets and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on arterial streets.

Street Rehabilitation & Slurry Seal Project

Update: JOST Bridge Construction Impacts to the I-5 Freeway

The following nighttime closures for the I-5 Freeway that were originally planned for September have been rescheduled to October.

From Monday, October 13, through Friday, October 17 the following closures are planned:

  • Northbound I-5 Freeway Jeffrey Road off-ramp and Sand Canyon Avenue off-ramp closures.
  • Southbound State Route (SR-133) to northbound I-5 Freeway connector closure.

All work will occur from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. 

The closures will allow crews to remove falsework steel beams and plywood forms over and across the I-5 Freeway for the Jeffrey Open Space Trail (JOST) Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge project.

Scheduled Palm Tree Maintenance

The City will be performing scheduled palm tree maintenance pruning between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on the following dates and locations. This work will require closing one lane on each side of the median. 

  • Saturday, October 4
    • Barranca Parkway from Sand Canyon to Launch
    • Barranca Parkway from Sand Canyon to Technology

  • Saturday, October 11
    • MacArthur Boulevard from Sky Park East to Douglas
    • Main Street from Sky Park South to Jamboree Road

Venta Spur Trail Closure 

The Venta Spur Trail will be closed between Jeffrey Road and Sanctuary Monday, September 29, through Friday, October 3, for concrete repairs. No public access will be permitted during this period.


State Route 73 Closures

The following nightly ramp closures in Irvine will continue on State Route 73 (SR-73) through Thursday, September 25, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.

  • Southbound SR-73 University Drive off-ramp
  • Southbound SR-73 MacArthur Boulevard on-ramp
  • Southbound SR-73 Bison Avenue off-ramp
  • Northbound SR-73 Bonita Canyon Drive off-ramp
  • Northbound SR-73 Bonita Canyon Drive on-ramp

In addition, the southbound SR-73 Newport Coast Drive on-ramp will be closed through Thursday, September 25, from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. and the northbound SR-73 Bison Avenue on-ramp will be closed Thursday, September 25, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. and Saturday, September 26, from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.

State Route 133 Closures

Southbound State Route 133 connector to northbound I-5 Freeway will be closed through Friday, September 25, from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. and Saturday, September 26, from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
