Roadway Improvements and Traffic Advisories

July 2–9, 2025


In addition to the projects listed below that may impact your commute, you can find information on work being done to enhance our City on the Capital Improvement Projects Map and the Road Construction Map.


The City will continue pavement rehabilitation of public streets in West Irvine, North Park, and North Park Square neighborhoods. The next phase of work for this project includes the application of slurry along Trevino Drive, Congress Place, View Park Avenue, Commerce, Exchange, and El Camino Real in the vicinity of the school areas and main entrances to the neighborhoods.

Work is scheduled to begin Monday, July 7, and is expected to be complete on July 25.

Crews will be working weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on residential streets and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on arterial streets.

Every effort will be made to complete this essential work quickly to minimize inconvenience to the community.

Culver & Alton Intersection Improvement

This intersection widening project will enhance traffic flow through the intersection and improve signal timing coordination along the Culver Drive and Alton Parkway corridors.

This phase of work includes construction of a bus pad in the eastbound direction along Alton Parkway, east of the intersection. Alton Parkway eastbound traffic is reduced to one travel lane through Thursday, July 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The entire project is anticipated to be complete this summer.

Culver & Alton Intersection Improvement

Jeffrey Open Space Trail Bicycle & Pedestrian Bridge Project

Construction continues on the Jeffrey Open Space Trail (JOST) Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge, a Class 1 Bridge that will connect the JOST/Cypress Village Trail to the north and the JOST extension to the south.

Falsework plywood forms are being removed from over and across Walnut Avenue south of Jeffrey Road. This work requires a temporary nightly full street closure of Walnut Avenue and the southbound I-5 Freeway on- and off-ramps at Jeffrey Road through Thursday, July 3, from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Additionally, there is no access to the Caltrans Park & Ride.

In addition, this phase of work will connect the new pedestrian bridge to the existing Cypress Village Trail, which requires a partial closure of the trail through Tuesday, September 30.

The entire project is anticipated to be complete in March 2026.

Jeffrey Open Space Trail I-5 Bicycle & Pedestrian Bridge Project

Harvard Avenue & Michelson Drive
Intersection Improvements

This intersection widening project will enhance traffic flow through the intersection and improve signal timing coordination along the Harvard Avenue and Michelson Drive corridors.

The City is removing and replacing asphalt pavement, curb and gutter, curb ramps, and sidewalk, as well as modifying traffic signal equipment behind temporary traffic control delineators and permanent K-rail lane closures.

Phase 1A began Wednesday, June 25, and will continue through August. During this phase, the right turn lane in the eastbound direction on Michelson Drive at Harvard Avenue is closed. Work occurs Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The project is anticipated to be complete in fall 2026.

 Harvard Avenue & Michelson Drive Intersection Improvements

Jamboree & Michelson Pedestrian Bridge Project

The City began construction last month on the Jamboree & Michelson Pedestrian Bridge, which will enhance pedestrian safety, relieve traffic congestion, and serve as a gateway monument for anyone entering the Irvine Business Complex.

Phase 1 began Monday, June 23, and involves temporary lane closures in both directions of Jamboree Road and Michelson Drive. Work occurs weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This phase of the project will continue through October. 

The Jamboree & Michelson Pedestrian Bridge project includes removing and replacing asphalt pavement, curb and gutter, curb ramps, and sidewalk. Elevator towers, stairs, bridge decks, and stainless steel supports will be installed, and traffic signal equipment will be modified. Work will be done behind temporary traffic control delineators and permanent K-rail lane closures. It is anticipated to be complete in summer 2027.

Every effort will be made to keep traffic flowing and minimize disruptions, but delays should be expected. Please consider using alternate routes when possible.

Jamboree & Michelson Pedestrian Bridge Project

Civic Center Parking Lot Rehabilitation

The Civic Center Parking Lot improvements project is expected to wrap up this month. 

The southern lot, including EV charging spaces and accessible parking adjacent to the Civic Center, will be closed until Wednesday, July 17, to apply cool pavement and striping. 

Additionally, the northern lot will be inaccessible from Wednesday, July 17, through Friday, July 25.

Work occurs Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., weather permitting.

Phase 5 has a significant impact on the availability of parking spots near the Civic Center entrance, however access to City Hall and the Irvine Child Development Center (ICDC) will be maintained. Accessible parking is available in front of ICDC. Additional parking is available off Harvard Avenue and San Juan.

Construction of Public Walkways in the Irvine Business Complex

As part of the City’s ongoing effort to improve pedestrian access throughout the City, construction is underway on new public walkways in the Irvine Business Complex at Armstrong Avenue and Kettering Street.

Work began Monday, June 16, and occurs Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on curb and sidewalk areas. When traffic control in the public roadway is required, work will occur weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The entire project is expected to be complete in July.

Armstrong

State Route 55 Lane Closures

Orange County Transportation Authority crews will be closing the southbound SR-55 MacArthur Boulevard straight on-ramp to accommodate asphalt paving activities. This work requires an extended closure from Thursday, July 10, at 9 p.m. through Monday, July 14, at 5 a.m.

Detour signs will be posted in advance. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead before traveling through the area. View freeway detours.
