This Week in DE&I
There are many cultural and religious holidays celebrated and recognized throughout our community this month. Learn about some of the significant dates being observed in Irvine below and on our DE&I calendar
June 12: Loving Day — Loving Day celebrates the 1967 Supreme Court decision that made interracial marriage legal across the U.S. It honors love, equality, and the couple who helped change history — Richard and Mildred Loving.
June 14: Flag Day — Flag Day marks the day in 1777 when the U.S. adopted its first flag with 13 stripes and 13 stars.
Have an old flag? Drop it in the retirement box at Northwood Community Park, 4531 Bryan Ave. near the playground entrance. It was placed in 2015 by local Boy Scout Gianluca Allesina and ensures flags are respectfully retired.
June 19: Juneteenth — Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery in the U.S. On June 19, 1865, the last enslaved people in Texas learned they were free. Today, it’s a federal holiday honoring African American freedom, culture, and history..
