City of Irvine Holds Swearing-In Ceremony for Newly Elected Councilmembers

City of Irvine Mayor Larry Agran and Councilmembers Mike Carroll, William Go, Melinda Liu, and James Mai were sworn into office for their respective terms in front of a capacity audience December 10 in the Council Chamber.

The evening marked a historic milestone for Irvine as the first swearing-in ceremony following Irvine’s transition to district-based elections.

2024 Holiday Closures

City of Irvine offices will be closed December 23–27 and January 1 in observance of the winter holidays. A list of holiday hours at all City facilities is available at cityofirvine.org. We wish you and your family a safe and happy holiday season.

Song Requests & Concert Photos

In support of the exhibition Thank You, Good Night: Concert Photography, the Great Park Gallery presents a unique live music and art making activity. Song Requests & Concert Posters will give participants the opportunity to request songs they love from the '60s to today to be performed live while creating fictional concert posters that represent their favorite artists.

Live music provided by Spencer Askin, master guitarist and face of social media personality Shreducation. No advance registration is needed for this free all-ages event. Learn more at yourgreatpark.org/arts.

There are many cultural and religious holidays celebrated and recognized throughout our community this month. Learn about some of the significant dates being observed in Irvine below and on our DE&I calendar.

Las Posadas: December 16
The religious festival of Las Posadas is primarily celebrated in Latin American countries, Mexico, and Spain. The festival is a reenactment of Mary and Joseph’s journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of shelter. After the reenactment, there is a celebration.

World Arabic Language Day: December 18
The Arabic language is a pillar of the cultural diversity of humanity. It is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, used daily by more than 400 million people. World Arabic Language Day is celebrated every year on December 18 since 2012.
