Road Construction & Improvement Projects

September 5-11, 2024 

In addition to the projects listed below that may impact your commute, you can find information on work being done to enhance our City on the Capital Improvement Projects Map and the Road Construction Map.


I-5 Full Freeway Closures

As part of the Jeffrey Open Space Trail Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge project, the I-5 Freeway will experience full overnight closures over two weekends. Please see details below. 

The work being done includes erecting falsework steel beams and plywood forms over and across the freeway. It will generate construction noise, including equipment backup alarms and heavy equipment engines, and additional lighting may be required. The Jeffrey Open Space Trail Bicycle and Pedestrian Bridge is expected to be completed in March 2026.

Full Southbound I-5 Freeway Closure

All lanes of the southbound I-5 Freeway will be closed from Culver Drive to Jeffrey Road Saturday, September 7, and Sunday, September 8, from 1 to 5 a.m.

Southbound I-5 Freeway on-ramps will also be closed at Culver Drive and Jeffrey Road. Detour signage will be in place at Culver Drive directing traffic onto Irvine Center Drive and Sand Canyon Avenue. 

JOST Southbound I-5 Closures

 Full Northbound I-5 Freeway Closure

All lanes of the northbound I-5 Freeway will be closed from Sand Canyon Avenue to Jeffrey Road Saturday, September 14, and Sunday, September 15, from 1 to 5 a.m.

Detour signage will be in place at Sand Canyon Avenue directing traffic onto Trabuco Road and Jeffrey Road.

JOST Northbound I-5 Closures

Overnight Lane Closures on I-405 Freeway

Overnight lane closures will take place on the I-405 Freeway between the I-5 Freeway and Bear Street Monday-Friday, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. through October.

This project will replace pavement slabs on the northbound and southbound I-405 Freeway. 

Please note there will be loud noise related to this construction. Please follow all posted signs and traffic instructions. The work is weather-dependent and subject to change. Additional information on the project can be found on the Caltrans website


Trabuco Road Improvements

Trabuco Road Improvements

Construction will take place on Trabuco Road between Jeffrey Road and Sand Canyon Avenue to remove and replace asphalt pavement, curbs and gutters, curb ramps, and sidewalk.

The work is scheduled to begin Monday, September 9. Construction will take place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., weather permitting, and is expected to be complete in late October.

The work will take place behind permanent K-rail closures during the working hours. Every effort will be made to keep traffic flowing and minimize disruptions; however, delays should be expected and motorists should consider using alternate routes.

Traffic Signal Shutdown at Barranca Parkway and Pacifica

The traffic signal at the intersection of Barranca Parkway and Pacifica will be turned off and/or placed in red flash mode Monday, September 9, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Every effort will be made to keep traffic flowing and minimize disruptions; however, delays should be expected and motorists should consider using alternate routes.
