Celebrate National Park and Recreation Month 

Have you earned your exclusive Park and Recreation Month enamel pin from the City of Irvine? If not, there is still time to do so. Take part in our Collectible Card Challenge in recognition of National Park and Recreation Month.

Visit our nationally-ranked parks and community centers to collect special collectible cards. Participants who collect at least eight cards by Friday, August 9, can visit the Information Desk at Irvine City Hall to receive your exclusive pin. Visit cityofirvine.org/parks for a list of participating locations and more information. 

Food, Family, and Free Fun

Grab a bite to eat, enjoy a drink, and experience free children's activities at The Layover! You are invited to Great Park's new eatery, located at the Terraced Lawn, within the Great Park Sports Complex. 

It is the perfect destination for those attending sporting events or activities at the Great Park, or just exploring the park. 

The Layover features food and drink options like burgers, shaved ice, wine, beer, and cocktails. Free inflatable slides, obstacle courses, and games allow parents to relax while younger visitors play at the park. The Layover is open weekends, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Learn more on our website. 

Come Together for Public Safety

Mark your calendars for a night out! Join the Irvine Police Department Tuesday, August 6, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Great Park Palm Court Arts Complex for National Night Out. The event brings neighbors and public safety together for a safer and stronger community. 

Meet Irvine Police officers and Orange County firefighters, see the police and fire vehicles and equipment, and take part in activities. There will also be food trucks, community booths, and giveaways. 

The community is also invited to bring a nonperishable food item to donate to Families Forward. The Great Park is located at 8000 Great Park Blvd. Free parking is available in Lot 2.

Great Park Garden Coalition 

How does a botanical garden make a difference in your community? The Great Park Garden Coalition makes it their mission to answer this question. With a goal of ensuring future generations have the opportunity to enjoy the beauty and knowledge to be found at the Great Park Botanical Garden, they are a key partner in the next phase of development at the Park.

Amenities and Attractions Update

Things are changing at the Great Park! The Great Park Farmers Market has a new location. Starting this Sunday, August 4, the Great Park Farmers Market will be located on Corsair Street, adjacent to the Palm Court Arts Complex, Great Park Live, and Parking Lot 2. The Farmers Market is open every Sunday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., weather permitting. Parking and admission are free. 

Up for a ride? The Great Park carousel is now free for riders. This Orange County gem was renovated in 2021 with repainted animals and new artwork for riders to enjoy. You must sign a waiver the day you take your free carousel ride; these can be completed online or in person.

The carousel is open for rides Thursday and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. It is closed Monday through Wednesday. Learn more about these amenities on the City's website. 

This Week in DE&I

There are many cultural and religious holidays celebrated and recognized throughout our community this month. Learn about some of the significant dates being observed in Irvine below and on our DE&I calendar.

August 7: Purple Heart Day
Purple Heart Day is a day for Americans to remember and honor the men and women who bravely represented their country and were wounded or killed while serving. These people are decorated with a Purple Heart, given by the President. This day is a chance to reflect on the bravery of those who have fought for the U.S. and to ensure their courage is never forgotten.
