This Week in DE&I

There are many cultural and religious holidays celebrated and recognized throughout our community this month. Learn about some of the significant dates being observed in Irvine below and on our DE&I calendar.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Korean American Day: January 13
Korean American Day is a day of celebration for Korean Americans, who are people of Korean descent who live in the United States. The day is observed on January 13, which marks the date in 1903 when 102 pioneer Korean immigrants arrived in the United States, initiating the first chapter of Korean immigration to America. Korean Americans have a long and rich history in the United States. At its meeting January 9, the Irvine City Council proclaimed January 13, 2024, as Korean American Day to commemorate the first step of the long and prosperous journey of Korean Americans in the United States.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day: January 15
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday in the United States that is observed on the third Monday in January. It is a day to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a Baptist minister and civil rights activist who played a key role in the American civil rights movement. Dr. King's faith, courage, and leadership helped the nation move closer to the ideals of what America was founded upon and continues to inspire Americans. His legacy is recognized on this day. The Irvine City Council proclaimed January 15, 2024, as Dr. Martin Luther, King, Jr. Day in Irvine at a recent City Council meeting.
