September is National Preparedness Month

Emergency Preparedness

During National Preparedness Month, City of Irvine residents are reminded to be prepared for emergencies. The devastating wildfires that tore through the Hawaiian island of Maui in August and the recent hurricane, locally, are critical reminders to sign up for alerts and systems that can save lives. Visit the links below to learn more. For further information, visit cityofirvine.org/prepare

Alert OC: AlertOC is a mass notification system designed to keep Orange County residents and businesses informed of emergencies. By registering with AlertOC, time-sensitive voice messages from the City of Irvine may be sent to your home, mobile, or business phone. Text messages may also be sent to mobile phones, email accounts, and hearing-impaired receiving devices.

All-Hazard Evacuation Map and Hi/Lo Siren: The City of Irvine has implemented an updated all-hazard evacuation map and a unique Hi/Lo siren to alert residents of the need to evacuate during an emergency. Know your zone ahead of an emergency and be prepared to evacuate if you hear the siren.

Emergency Radio 1640 AM: The City operates and maintains this radio station to better provide effective emergency communication to motorists and residents. This station broadcasts throughout Irvine 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and can provide real-time emergency information on topics including: evacuations; road
closures; and emergency services and shelter during situations such as earthquakes, fires, power outages, or other disasters. In an emergency, tune to AM 1640 on your radio.

Draw Irvine and Ensure your Voice is Heard

As the City of Irvine continues its pursuit of City Council district elections, we want to be sure resident voices are heard in creating the boundaries of future voting districts.

On July 11, the City Council selected six focus maps to consider throughout the process, and following the public hearing, the City’s demographer created maps based on feedback provided by the City Council. Residents are encouraged to review the focus maps and share their district line preferences to ensure their neighborhoods are represented.

Residents can provide input on the focus maps at the upcoming public hearing Tuesday, September 12, at 6 p.m. Visit drawirvine.org to view the draft maps, submit feedback, and view a schedule of the districting events and deadlines.

This Week in DE&I

There are many cultural and religious holidays celebrated and recognized throughout our community this month. Learn about some of the significant dates being observed in Irvine below and on our DE&I calendar.

DE&I

Patriot Day & Rosh Hashana

September 11: Patriot Day
Patriot Day is an annual observance in the United States that commemorates the September 11 attacks in 2001. On this day, people remember and honor the nearly 3,000 individuals who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and the passengers of Flight 93.

Patriot Day is a time for individuals, communities, and the nation as a whole to pay tribute to the victims, as well as the first responders and ordinary citizens who demonstrated courage and selflessness in the face of tragedy.

September 15: Rosh Hashana Begins

Rosh Hashanah is a significant Jewish holiday that marks the beginning of the Jewish New Year. The name "Rosh Hashanah" translates to "Head of the Year" in Hebrew. It is a time of reflection, repentance, and renewal, and it falls on the first and second days of the Hebrew month of Tishrei, which usually corresponds to September or October.

During Rosh Hashanah, Jewish communities around the world come together for special prayers, synagogue services, and festive meals.
