California Senate Bill 1383 (SB 1383) is a law that requires every business and resident to recycle their organic waste. Organic waste includes green waste, food waste, meat, bones, dairy, fruit and vegetable scraps, food-soiled napkins and paper towels, and yard clippings. Organic waste can be recycled into compost or processed into renewable energy at waste facilities.
The organic waste recycling program for three-cart residences has begun. Please separate your food waste into your green-lid cart. Waste Management (WM) has started delivering kitchen food pails to three-cart residents to assist with participation.
Programs will be gradually implemented in two-cart and multi-family communities. Please pay close attention to the information you receive from your property manager or WM.

Southern California Edison (SCE) will be hosting two electrification workshops in the Conference and Training Center at Irvine City Hall this summer.
On Thursday, June 15, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the HVAC and Heat Pump Training will provide a basic understanding of HVAC systems as well as how various HVAC systems and applications can save energy and support building electrification and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goals.
On Tuesday, July 11, from 8:30 a.m. to noon, the Practical Guide to All-Electric Residential Building workshop will show why electric homes facilitate easier energy code compliance. All-electric homes can be cheaper to build and operate, healthier and more comfortable to live in, and have GHG emissions roughly half that of mixed-fuel homes. Taught by instructors who have built all-electric homes for themselves and are experts in the field, you’ll get an insider view of how to design and build electric, with examples from their professional work, how to overcome common objections and obstacles, and lessons learned from the field.
Find more information about both workshops and register here.
The City is moving forward with the development of the Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (CAAP). The plan will set ambitious but achievable emissions reduction targets for the City and lay out a pathway to achieving our climate goals across both municipal operations and our community.
City Council will review the draft CAAP measures during the regular City Council meeting on Tuesday, June 27. There will be in-person and online opportunities for the Irvine community to engage with the draft measures later this summer. Stay updated on CAAP progress and events through our climate planning webpage and the City’s social media.
