Irvine Ranch Water District

Water News and Tips from Irvine Ranch Water District

Irvine has been well positioned to weather drought for years, thanks to the resilience and diversity of local water sources established by Irvine Ranch Water District (IRWD).

IRWD has invested in groundwater wells, groundwater treatment systems, local water runoff capture, water banking, reservoirs, and one of the most extensive water recycling systems in the nation. Only 18% of our water is imported from outside our immediate area — which means we do not rely heavily on water from Northern California, where the effects of the current drought are most severe.

Even so, September is the time to water your yard 30% less. Though it is still hot out, the days are getting shorter and plants are entering their dormant period. Dial back your sprinkler timer to save on your water bill. Find local watering schedules at wateringuide.com.

Smoke Free Irvine

Irvine is Proud to be Smoke Free

Residents and visitors can breathe easy in Irvine, as smoking is prohibited in all public places.

Ordinance 19-17 was expanded in 2019 to prohibit smoking in public places such as sidewalks, streets, and alleys as well as common areas of multi-unit residences, like laundry rooms, play areas, and pools.

All smoking products are included in this ordinance, such as tobacco, e-cigarettes, vaporizers, and marijuana. Smoking is only permitted in the following locations, unless otherwise prohibited by state or federal law:

  • Private residential property, other than those used as a child care or health care facility subject to State licensing requirements.
  • Within a moving or stationary vehicle, including a vehicle on a public street or right of way, or parked in a public place.

Violations of the ordinance are infractions of the City's Municipal Code and fines ranging from $100 to $500 may be issued. Visit cityofirvine.org/smokefree to learn more.
