Irvine Post Office Renamed In Honor of Tuskegee Airman

Tuskegee Airman Post Office Renamed

The U.S. Post Office located at 1 League, Irvine is now known as the Tuskegee Airman Lt. Col. Robert J. Friend Memorial Post Office Building after the late Tuskegee airman.

A ribbon-cutting and renaming ceremony was held recently by Congresswoman Katie Porter, who introduced the bill to rename the post office in his honor.

Friend was an Irvine resident since the 1970s and one of the last surviving members of the Tuskegee Airmen. He flew in 142 combat missions while stationed in Europe during World War II as a member of the all-Black "Red Tails" unit. Friend received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Presidential Unit Citation, Bronze Star with Flying Cross, three Distinguished Service Medals, and the Air Medal.

Seniors

Celebrate our Seniors

National Senior Citizens Day was celebrated August 21. This day recognizes the achievements of the more mature representatives of our nation, city, and community and provides an opportunity to show our appreciation for their dedication, accomplishments, and services they give throughout their lives.

Irvine’s senior population plays a vital role in our community. The City of Irvine’s Senior Services division provides resources, services, and activities for those ages 50 and older at three dedicated centers throughout Irvine — each offering a multitude of opportunities for senior participation in our community. Learn more and get involved at irvineseniors.org.
