Organic Food Waste Recycling

Learn about Food Waste Recycling

Did you know a new food waste recycling program for residents is coming to Irvine?

Join the City's virtual town hall to learn about the Residential Food Waste Program, which applies to homes with three waste collection carts and those HOA communities with only two collection carts.

The virtual town hall will be held Wednesday, July 13, from 6 to 7 p.m. For more information and to register for the town hall, visit cityofirvine.org/sb1383. Contact environmentalprograms@cityofirvine.org with any questions.

UCI Blood Drive

Make a Life-saving Donation at Great Park

There is currently a great need for blood donations both locally and nationally. UCI Health and the City of Irvine have partnered for a series of blood drives being held at Great Park. The next blood drive will take place Tuesday, July 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Parking Lot 2 at Great Park.

Join the community in this life-saving mission. The UCI Medical Center is the only Level 1 Trauma Center in Orange County, and transfuses over 1,000 units of blood every month. Cancer patients, people who have experienced severe trauma such as an auto accident, as well as babies in the NICU, make up a high percentage of those receiving blood every day.

Appointments are required for all donors. Please visit UCI Health's website to make an appointment. For more information about eligibility, safety, and other common questions about blood drives, please visit the UCI Health Blood Donations page.

Protect our Ecosystems Stay on the Trails

We know the open space trails serve as a beautiful backdrop for capturing photos of family and important milestones, such as graduations and engagements, but please remember to stay on the trails. It protects the ecosystems surrounding the trail and keeps our open space beautiful.

Our open space rangers are out on the trails to assist hikers and safeguard the flora and fauna, and they may issue citations for violations. Thank you for helping to preserve this local treasure. Visit cityofirvine.org/openspace to plan your next visit to the trails.

Sweet Shade Neighborhood Park

Sweet Shade Neighborhood Park to be Irvine's First Universal Playground

We are excited to share that the Sweet Shade Neighborhood Park playground will be updated to become a Universal Playground thanks to $2.8 million in State funding secured by Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris. The playground will be the first of its kind here in Irvine and will be designed to meet the needs of all residents regardless of ability.

The Universal Playground will include multigenerational play components to support playground usage by those with disabilities, as well as their parents and caregivers; an adaptive swing; a sensory garden; and an adjacent restroom and adult changing area. The playground will be wheelchair accessible, include interactive equipment for a variety of ages, and will be usable by all people to the greatest extent possible.

This is part of our ongoing efforts to ensure Irvine is an inclusive community and we are grateful for Assemblywoman Norris' support and partnership. As plans are finalized on the playground's construction, updates will be posted online at cityofirvine.org/sweetshadeplayground. For more information, visit the City of Irvine Disability Services website, email disabilityservices@cityofirvine.org, or call 949-724-6637.
