Memorial Day Events

Memorial Day Events

Join the City of Irvine this Memorial Day weekend to pay tribute to America’s fallen.

On Sunday, May 29, at 4 p.m., a special candle lighting ceremony will be held at the Northwood Gratitude and Honor Memorial at Northwood Community Park. To honor our military fallen, we are pleased to feature guest speakers Jim and Carla Hogan, Gold Star parents of Lance Corporal Donald J. Hogan who lost his life while serving our nation in Afghanistan.

On Monday, May 30, at 10 a.m., the City of Irvine will host its annual Memorial Day Ceremony in the Formal Garden at Colonel Bill Barber Marine Corps Memorial Park. A Commanding Officer from Irvine’s adopted 2/11 Marine Battalion will speak to pay tribute to our military fallen.

For more information about these events, visit cityofirvine.org/specialevents.

Statewide Direct Primary Election

Vote in the Statewide Direct Primary Election

Fifteen Vote Centers will be available in Irvine for the June 7 Statewide Direct Primary Election.

In addition to in-person voting, all registered voters received a vote-by-mail ballot in mid-May. In lieu of voting in person, voters can drop off their completed ballots at any Orange County Vote Center (including 15 in Irvine), in any secured ballot drop box in Orange County (including 10 in Irvine), in any U.S. mailbox, or at any Vote Center with a drive-thru option.

Please visit cityofirvine.org/election or ocvote.gov for detailed information on voting options, Vote Center location information, and additional resources.

Asparagus Day

Celebrating Asparagus!

Have you ever wondered why there are asparagus in the City logo or at Plaza Park? Well, this green vegetable is the official vegetable of the City of Irvine. National Asparagus Day just so happens to fall in the month of May, too!

Why is asparagus named the City vegetable, you may ask? It was one of the most prevalent crops grown on the Irvine Ranch during the City's early beginnings.

A few fun facts: asparagus can grow up to 7 inches in one day! And, just like tree trunks, the thicker the asparagus stem, the older the plant.

Bite into that knowledge! You can learn more about our City's ties to this vegetable at cityofirvine.org/asparagus

Diaper Drive

Support Babies in Need

Support families with babies and toddlers experiencing homelessness by donating diapers, wipes, and baby food through June 10.

All donations go toward HomeAid’s goal of collecting 1 million essential items for Orange County families in need.

Donations can be dropped off through June 10 at Irvine City Hall or Great Park Visitors Center during business hours. New, unopened packages of diapers and wipes are welcome, as well as canned or packaged baby food (no glass containers). Donations can also be made at homeaidoc.org/events/diapers.

Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

Millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental illness. This year’s theme for Mental Health Month is “Together for Mental Health,” and advocates strive to bring voices together to advocate for mental health and access to care.

The City of Irvine FOR Families program provides free information and short-term support to individuals, couples, and families living in Irvine who need assistance identifying and accessing resources, including mental health resources.

Additionally, the Irvine Police Department Mental Health Unit provides a case-management approach to those in need of mental health services. Two dedicated Mental Health Officers are paired with a County clinician to follow up weekly on cases in which a mental health need is identified. Our Mental Health Officers have advanced expertise, with one working toward a doctoral degree in psychology.
