Martin Luther King Jr. Day is January 17

Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Day is a holiday in the United States honoring the achievements of Martin Luther King Jr., a Baptist minister and civil rights leader who advocated for equality and nonviolent resistance against racial segregation.

It is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.

The City of Irvine is proud to support Irvine-based nonprofit Team Kids in its MLK Day of Service Passport program. This challenge invites young people to take part in various service projects, such as donating to a local food pantry or shelter.

January is national Resolve to be Ready month, and all Californians should be prepared in the event of an unexpected emergency, such as an earthquake.

Download the MyShake App for free to receive earthquake warning alerts. Adjust app settings to receive emergency alerts by turning location settings to “always-on.” Location services allow the app technology to connect with nearby ground sensors and provide alerts to app users in the area where shaking will occur.
